Denis breaks Joao to avoid an opening set tie-break as he wins set 1 7-5
Edit: Going to a 3rd set as Joao takes set 2 6-4. Pretty good level from both guys today and the crowd (heavily rooting for Fonseca) is playing their part as well. Shapo has maintained his composure very well thus far today.

MTO for Fonseca as he is about to serve at 3-2 in set 3. He has played a lot of tennis in the last couple of weeks.

Fonseca beats Shapo for the 2nd week in a row 5-7 6-4 6-3. The young kid from Brazil played very well and was much cleaner than Denis today. Shapo had two more winners in the match, but also 12 more unforced errors. Ultimately, that was where the match was won and lost.

I was not even expecting to find Shapo there at 23, huh.

Yeah, over the last 13 months, Shapo has won 3 tourneys (2 250's and a 500), so he's done a nice job rebuilding his ranking.

This is probably where Shapo will be for the rest of his career. Dropping in and out of the top 30. He's hit that age where he's a finished product unfortunately.

Yeah, I don't see him getting back into the top 10 either, but I can see him cracking the top 20 and still winning the occasional 250 or 500 tourney. He's won a little over $14 million in career earnings and if he keeps playing for another five years or so, he could get close to the 20 million mark.
That knee injury that kept him on the sidelines for about 9 months was pretty serious and even Denis says he wasn't sure if he would be able to continue playing. He's a married man now and seems to be very content with his life away from the court which is great to see.

Cam Norrie just sent Carlitos packing 4-6 6-3 6-4. Charlie recorded 54 unforced errors in the match (wowza).

Felix battles through Alexandre Muller in a three set tussle that required a final set tie-break. He keeps his ATP Finals hopes alive for another day.

Our local hopes for a grand slam winner live and die with de Minaur but seems like he's hit a wall too where he won't ever win a slam, if he even makes it past the quarters. Although reaching sixth in the world is nothing to sneeze at either (better than Shapo at 10).
For all of Kyrgios' faults he was our most talented player since Cash or Rafter, certainly more talented than Demon but he just never had the commensurate work ethic to be a champion of the sport.

The guy had talent but his career is just a Temu Krygios. Nick got into the Wimbledon final by default but he earned his way to a semi, which is Australia's best result since Hewitt.

Thought Popyrin would do better after his Montreal breakthrough last year. But he's been stagnant and his ranking is back down in the 40s

Llayton Hewitt? Nick is all talent, no work ethic or desire. I respect a player like ADM that maximizes every inch of talent over a slacker.

Lleyton Hewitt had all the talent of a monkey wrench, if that's what you're referring to. The grindiest of grinders.

lol - Tomic to his credit is still battling it out on the Challenger Tour. His dad really did him no favors during his formative years.

I think John Tomic can take some (or maybe a lot) of the credit for getting his son to a pretty high level but the wheels falling off can also definitely be attributed to his methods.

Jelena Dokic (see if there's a pattern here in terms of geography and culture) spoke a couple of years ago about being fairly close to suicide after enduring the abuse of her father. I can't empathise personally but I did grow up with someone who was abused at home, I struggle to fathom how one could do that to their child.
