Yeah I cant see them being THIS short sigted.
Maybe if its a U24 top of lineup guy, I can see it. But we probably won't get that person with the VGK pick anyways.

Christian Dvorak cost the Habs a 1st and a 2nd when they traded for him to kick off their rebuild and he had a career high of 38 points at the time of the trade when he was 25 years old. One could argue (if the Habs rebuild model is the one to follow as Francis cited) that the Flames paid too little when they acquired 25 year old Frost (career high of 46 points at the time of the trade) and 24 year old Farabee (career high 50 points) as they only gave up a 2nd and did not add a 1st.

Few tidbits from nhltraderumors:
-According to Dave Littman, the Flames are one of five teams (others being Toronto, Florida, Detroit, and Buffalo) sniffing around CBJ's Yegor Chinnakov. According to Lebrun, there was 26 scouts in attendance to watch his first game of the season against the Avs (he was healthy scratched the first three games, and played an average of 8:41 TOI in the others).
-Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province suggests that the Canucks should take a run at Mikael Backlund, citing their need for veteran stability.
-Littman cites Pagnotta saying that teams are waiting to pounce on the Flames assets if they choose to sell, and brings up Andersson, Kadri (says his name is out there), Coleman, and even Weegar.
-I read an article a few days ago that said that Owen Power is very unhappy in Buffalo, and may want a change...

They could pounce on Andersson for the past 5 months. No one’s stopping them.

They can pounce on him when he's a UFA. Until then, they have to give something up to get him. Conroy is under no obligation to accept a lowball offer.

For calgary, I love the news that the two most disgruntled players are svechnikov and power. If we sold every current player and prospect (that we don't see as a core piece 2 years from now) to just end up with those acquisitions, I would be very upbeat about it.

How about a Yegor (Sharky) for Yegor trade - was thinking about this when I was on the way home from dropping my kid off - and then you post this!
Who else is out there that fits our timeline - Nick Robertson? - if we can't land Jason, get his younger brother? Anyone that needs to be liberated out of Buffalo (Isak Rosen)? Fabian Lysell from BOS? Lukas Reichel (only if he wears #26)? Brennan Othmann from NYR?

Ben is a bit of a fool if he thinks Backlund would go there.

Not sure I see the point in trading Sharangovich for Chinakhov. Blue Jackets would presumably want the Flames to add to offset that contract, right? Meanwhile the Flames would be trading for a less productive winger who isn't much younger?

We certainly don't need more bottom 6 wingers.
If its not a 1A/1B center (which is almost unicorn like to get via trade) we really don't want it.
My source said nothings changed, there's no panic to sell assets but the Flames remain active in listening to ALL offers and the usual suspects remain the most popular targets.
One name that's not typically talked about but is gaining interest is Frost, though CGY just signed him.
Said that CGY would be more inclined to make a "hockey trade" to bring in more youth and stability long term if anything.
No appetite to panic trade/salvage something that isn't there.
Remains commited to building through the draft, some big names coming up.

Here’s the issue. We have legit bottom six wingers playing in the top six. That is a big reason why we cannot score. Farabee is not top six f. Nor is Coleman. Yet they are getting that ice time.
I see no problem taking a swing on a player in their early 20s who hasn’t lived up to expectations/draft position in their current team. Maybe they pop here. We have 3 wingers who are top 6 worthy. Huby Zary and Coronato. That leaves room for 1 to come in. I’m not suggesting a player can come in and save the season, but would rather lose 3-2 than 3-1. Give the fans some element of entertaining hockey instead of spank jobs night after night.

What is Zary showing that suggests he’s a top 6?

Conroy has been doing that with some success.
I think Bahl was a good add. Maybe Pachal as well but he always seems to be in Huska’s doghouse.
But then you have the other side of the coin with Sharangovich, Farabee and Frost. Basically inherited another team’s player that they had given runway to and had lost patience in.
I agree with your comment on too many bottom 6 forwards. If it was me I would have a very short list of untouchables. I would try and keep:
Coronato
Wolf
Parekh
Gridin
Bahl
Klapka
Honzek
If push came to shove the top 4 would probably be my only untouchables.

Sounds like they are continuing the rebuild for a third year in a row but are keeping an eye on assets that they could obtain om the cheap.
I would be surprised if they trade Frost but if they did they likely could obtain more draft capital than they gave up to get him and Farabee.

For me it's players like Power or bust.
Always aim for high profile younger players who need a change of scenery.
In more cases than not it seems those are the ones that pan out nicely. And yes, I realize we aren't a flashy destination either. But maybe Power just wants out of there, specifically.
