I’m probably the most annoying person to watch a Jays playoff game with. Anxiousness levels off the charts and I’m always bracing for and expecting the worst. Knowing this and knowing myself, I typically choose not to watch the big games with other people and just lock myself in isolation at home by myself.
Last night, game 7 I figured what the heck? Let’s venture out in to the world and have some fun. So off to the neighbourhood watering hole I go with my brother, 2 nephews and another buddy. And I’m oddly calm and positive all game. Even when it was looking grim. I kept saying - “don’t worry. We need a hero and we are getting a hero”. I was even surprised myself at how positive I was being given how I normally behave when it comes to pro sports and my two favourite teams (Jays and Flames, lol)
My brother was on Springer’s ass all game. Saying how he needs to come out, his knee is too bad, he can’t properly swing and generate power, he’s a liability to the team - on and on and on. And honestly, part of me did agree with him. But I kept saying no, Springer is a gamer and we need him. Anyways, fast forward to THE Springer at bat - and again him and I are getting in to over whether he should even be at the plate. I say to him - Springer is going to be the hero I have been talking about. He is hitting a homerun right now (for ME to make a positive declaration like that in a moment like that is very out of character. Again, normally I’m the one saying the Debbie downer stuff). I say to him, Springer hits a homerun here and you are buying a Springer jersey immediately. He says yes, then says “don’t worry I’ll buy you one too” while laughing and scoffing as though it’s the most impossible idea for Springer to knock one out. I say yes! Let’s go! We fist bump on it. And I’m not kidding you immediately as we fist bump -BOOM goes the dynamite. Springer dinger.
So - I now have a lifelong core sports memory to share with my brother and I’ll have an awesome keepsake to go along with it. We ordered the jerseys - chose the dark coloured “night mode” ones.
What an unforgettable moment for Springer and the Jays. I’m not sure yet where this one ranks for me, but it’s right up there if not beyond the Bautista bat-flip. This was just incredible.

That's logically the most likely lineup you'd expect. Schneider needs to be on the roster as well though. If you need a pinch hitter in a tight spot or injury replacement he's obviously a pretty good option, and a far better bat than IKF or Straw.
Will be interesting to see if Bo can step in and produce at his typical level at the plate after such a long layoff. At worst he's still a significant upgrade offensively over IKF in the order, but no way I'd be putting him into the field. His D is below average at the best of times and you'd have to imagine that he is still nowhere near 100% in terms of movement.
|
Oops I somehow missed Schneider on the bench.

Dodgers starters are obviously really good, but the Jays have really done well this season against high end starters, it's the lower end starters that seemed to give them fits. And in these playoffs especially they really pounded good starting pitching like Fried, Rodon, Schlittler, Kirby, Gilbert, etc
Jays D is also.much better than the Dodgers, and home advantage is also great to have for a team with he best home record in MLB this year.
Jays bullpen is frightening against the Dodgers offense, but Jays pitching did enough to get past the vaunted Yankees offense.
Once again Jays are the under dogs. It suits this team well.

Yes he sometimes makes bone-headed plays but he has also come up with massive hits. And the moment doesn't happen last night without an incredibly disciplined AB to generate a walk.
Yet some fans just seem to have a dislike for him. Not sure why

spent quite a bit of time at spring training last year (2024) and every game I was at Barger did something that grabbed my attention- I'm normally a poor judge of talent, get distracted by the wrong things, but remember thinking- they have a player here. I'm glad how things are going for him

The optimistic side of me feels like this team is a team of destiny.
The pessimistic side of me just watched the Dodgers destroy a team that plays similar to the Blue Jays (and arguably were a better version of them) in 4 games.
Either way...Let's Go Blue Jays!

I am still thinking about that Bassitt 72 mph curveball to strikeout Suarez on a full count. Insane pitch in that spot. Insane.
And the call could have gone either way. Really tough one for the ump to call a strike but he made the correct call. It clipped the zone. Suarez’s freakout is just icing on the cake

How'd you like to be the guy in the Springer jersey that caught the homer? Pretty epic.

Such a huge strikeout too. Keeps 8-9-1 as the order for the 9th and avoid Raleigh getting another at bat.

I get why Suarez was going insane. The same pitch but in a better location 2-3 pitches earlier was called a ball, now this one further outside is a strike? Upsetting to say the least in that big of a moment.
Happy to get the (make-up) call though!

He also missed a strike call earlier in that bat that was even more of a strike
But he got the crucial call right. So I give him credit for that.
And what a ballsy pitch to throw.
I thought in the top of the 9th, the Mariner really lacked patience. I think they could have worked Hoffman for a walk. Their entire mindset should have been to get one guy on, so you got Raleigh to the plate. And I think if they had done that, Hoffman would have walked at least one guy.
Lack of plate discipline ultimately hurt them.

LF Springer
RF Lukes
1B Vlad
DH Bo
C Kirk
CF Varsho
2B Clement
3B Barger
SS Giminez
Heineman, IKF, Straw on the bench.
EDIT: Just want to point out that every single one of those players is under control next season except for Bo. How sweet is that?
|
Springer is so banged up. I don't know how he can play in the field at this point. Hope a few days helps, but I'd imagine we're looking at Bo as a bench bat.
