I feel like cyclists, of all people, should better understand the importance of looking out for pedestrians.
It's a weird area of no one gives a crapper. Oh I guess you are just gonna jog here now.

Have you tried cycling through there? I've had to a few times this summer because the north path is closed, and even creeping along at 10km/h is full of surprises. People just blindly walking into the cycle path without looking, spinning around, staring at their phones. Walking with strollers in the bike lanes. Like it takes real effort to not hit them because they don't pay attention to their surroundings. Bells are just adding to the atmosphere, not to tell you to look out for your own survival, or that your kid is about to get run over because they are running around like a squirrel.

I'm sure there are plenty of cyclists doing stupid dangerous things too. It's everyone. They are all awful.

Travel related gear grinder because I didn't realize that US Preclearance at YYC closes at 8pm. I'm taking the red eye to Atlanta and have to do customs/immigration in Atlanta including picking up and re-checking my bag for a connecting flight. The connection is pretty tight to begin with and this additional step is going to cut into my breakfast lounge time in ATL.

I was just in the Atlanta Airport

The International Terminal and the Domestic Terminal are miles away from each other.

I had some dude yell at me the other day on a pathway for ringing my bell at him.

I always do it as a courtesy but this guy really took exception to a ####ing bell... people are too tightly wound these days.

I ride through Eau Claire every day and I don't recall seeing these yield signs for cyclists to give right of way to pedestrians. Pretty much every pathway intersection has no signage at all and the one sign I do know of if is a yield sign for those people who are crossing the bike path.

Yup, I'm on it every weekday too and I have not seen that signage. The only one may be at the intersection to the smaller bridge onto Prince's island. I always slow down in that area.

When did they start doing that? They were open late only a couple of years ago when I dropped my son off for that same Atlanta red eye.

I think some folks on pathways dont actually know what the bell ringing is for.
Its 'a warning that i am going to pass you on the left so dont step in front of me' not 'you better jump off the pathway so I can have the whole path'

Maybe part of the reason why we are seeing more pedestrian incidents now is because we have an influx of people coming from places not used to yielding, and expecting pedestrians to cross only when the vehicle passes? I also notice in Toronto, cars don't typically yield to pedestrians, and pedestrians don't expect you to. I still remember being yelled at by a pedestrian for breaking their flow when I yielded to them.

And to be clear, I'm not victim blaming. Just trying to find a reason (besides the obvious "people can't drive" reason).
We looked up the regulations a few years back.

1. Vehicles have the right of way on all Alberta roadways.

2. Vehicles must yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks (marked or unmarked) if the pedestrian has indicated to the driver that they wish to cross the roadway and it is reasonable to do so.

It’s less, “pedestrians have the right of way” and more “vehicles have the right of way, but must yield the right of way to pedestrians under certain circumstances”.

I flew to Atlanta on the red eye in September 2023, and we had to clear customs down there. It might depend on what other flights are going to the States around the same time. When I went, the last previous US-bound flight was one to LAX about 2 hours before the ATL flight.

When you get to ATL, make sure to stay airside and take the "Plane Train" between terminals and don't exit to the arrivals level. Once you clear customs, you may have to go through security again to get to the train, but it will still be faster.

Because you're connecting and need to recheck your bags, it might be more intuitive to do that anyway, but when I went, I was staying in Atlanta, so I exited to the Arrivals level and the only way to get to the Domestic terminal from there is an insanely slow shuttle bus that drives on public streets around the whole airport. It was awful.

I ring all the time, but joggers in the bike lanes with earbuds in are a write-off. They never hear you. Also, why are you on the bike lane? You may think you run fast, but your pathetic compared to the power of the mighty bicycle (powered by the all powerful bicycle lobby, ruining your roads/commutes for like 1000 years or something).

So many people don’t despite the sign and the fact that legally you have to yield to pedestrians in a mixed use area. Cyclists just rip right through there.

The cyclists who dont use their bell when passing is a whole other gear grinder.
It really depends on if I am walking or cycling.

I say we put the cyclists and pedestrians in a cage and let them fight to the death for supremacy.

Granted, the cyclists have the upper hand with their Oakleys, copious spandex and helmets.
