The Blues were also in last place half way through the season .
They called up a rookie goalie who got extremely hot , rode momentum into the playoffs and won - a team of destiny type situation
Then haven’t done anything since and are kind of stuck in the middle
That’s a once in a lifetime season . There’s a reason they were the first team to ever go from last to win it all in a season

Well, I wouldn't have thought Colorado would trade Cal Ritchie, but...

Colorado is very much in a win now situation though. Their core players are in their prime so it's all about trying to get another cup or 2.
Montreal is just building towards their contention window. So they still have to balance things a little more.

Yet you say we don't have a true #1C but Kadri > ROR. How does that work?

Now if you are a deep team who is playing stars or top 3 D in your bottom 6 / bottom 3 D that’s different . That’s building depth through acquiring as many stars as you can . Florida has depth , but they don’t have what I would call depth players .
Collecting 10-15 goals guys who once in their career got 20 goals is going to have no effect on winning a cup . These guys are a dime a dozen and everywhere

I don’t agree with that. Kadri now is worst than ROR in those playoffs. You’ll probably scream about that like Huska but we can just disagree

If you define "depth" as "4th liners", I guess you can make that argument. Most people define depth as anyone who's not a star player. Coleman was depth on TB. Some might even define a 51 point player on Florida as depth.

Yeah. I think there is a difference between depth and having a high volume of good to mid. Calgary has a lot of the latter, not the former.

Man, Montreal looks great to start the year. That end of game sequence leading to the tying goal was insane. They are also the youngest team in the NHL, by quite a large margin.

I was listening to Frank on 960 this morning and they were talking about Necas and that being someone who is not taking a discount and how the Rantanen trade has kind of blown up for the Avs and it makes me wonder if and why Makar would extend there?
They had Bryram and turned him into Middlestat who was turned into Coyle who was shipped out as a cap dump. They signed Nelson to 3 years and gave up a 1st and their best prospect. Landeskgog and MacKinnon are over 30. Necas may stay for around the same money that Rantanen got in Dallas which is a pretty big failure for the Avs.
Does Makar want to sign his last max term deal on a team on the down swing or does he want to come home to open a brand new rink with a team on the upswing?

I'm crossing fingers Makar comes home in 2027. He'd be an amazing addition to our defense core. New arena, new team vibe (young and on the up) and a new start. A man can dream.

It feels plausible with the directions of both teams and the fact Makar does live here in the summer. It’s a dream for sure but it does feel like it has potential to be a reality.

They are 4-0-1 and playing dominant hockey. Avs are blown up? Seems like you are dreaming.

Jayden Struble is someone the Flames would have interest in. The Canadiens are already jammed at defence, particularly on the left, and may be more realistic than Hage.

Calgary is on an upswing?
The Flames are likely having to go on a downswing before they go on an upswing.

Is Makar a free agent tomorrow? I could swear it was 2 years from now.

So you skipped over the piece where they could lose Necas for nothing this summer? The start this year impacts where they will be 2 years from now?
Interesting

When you have a player like MacKinnon you ride out their prime years and try to build around them. You don't trade them at 30. The team is also playing great so far this year, with Necas and Wedgewood on fire.
All efforts should be made towards signing Necas first. They have until the deadline to decide on that, but can probably get a great roster player for him in return if he doesn't want to sign.

You can disagree with it until you are blue in the face. Everything statistically says Kadri is better. You are just ##### because you got called out for calling ROR a top line centre.
