There are different levels of funding depending on the school (ranging from 0% to 50%), but the latest data I've seen shows the weighted average funding level for private schools in BC being only about 40% of what public schools receive per student.
So if BC can have 3x as many private school students while providing barely over 1/2 the funding per student that Alberta does, then I don't think reduced government funding would necessarily push the majority of private school students back into the public system.

From my days of going to public school in B.C. there was no catholic school system. So in Kamloops the private school was St.Annes academy which was essentially a catholic school. In highschool football we played against Vancouver College and Notre Dame which were essentially two Catholic prep schools or at least Van College had that angle (full of deplorable rich kids).
So I suspect that is a big factor as to why the private school enrollment there is higher than Alberta which has a dedicated catholic school system. Still enough old white money with Christian values there...plus others who love the prestige of having their kids in private school.
That said. Fund Catholic and the other private schools at 40% in Alberta and it would likely be a lot of money for the public schools here to fix all their gripes and serve kobe beef for lunch every day.

Alright, we've reached the point in the negotiations where an agreed settlement is pretty unlikely. Here are the possible outcomes from here:
1) Mutually agreed to arbitration
2) Government-imposed arbitration (I don't think they want this, as it takes away their control of the situation)
3) A legislated settlement where the government simply enacts legislation that dictates terms of the agreement, and uses the notwithstanding clause to prevent any Charter challenge of their use of the clause.
I think 3) is likely, the question is how do teachers respond? If we are forced back and the government simply dictates the terms of the settlement and enacts the notwithstanding clause to prevent any court challenge of the imposition, do teachers show up the next day or do they continue the strike anyway?

Isn’t there just straight legislate back to work and you work without a contract under the terms of the old contract?

The NDP led royalty review considered the tax and invest regime of the province when making recommendations on royalties. The Oil industry paid 20 billion in royaltie last year.. If you want to do something raise corporate taxes as profits are just going into buybacks and dividends. Do t mess with the structure that incentivizes investment in more production.
The reason Alberta does not have a PST is the O+G roaylties. If you want to add billions in education we should add a PST and use the remaining funds to worm us off O+G dollars.
The problem in Alberta is we are undertaxed.

Yes and that would either be arbitration or government-imposed terms of employment.

Can we start with sensible income tax In line with the rest of the country, before we go to regressive taxes that hit the people the hardest who spend the highest share of their weekly income Immediately.

Well start with taxing people making over 100k at the same levels as BC and Ontario do and see how that works out first. If still short, then you can add a PST.

This thread got dumb. Jeezus.
We need to fund education more, bottom line.
As a private school guy I will pay more for that for sure. I’ve asked my wife to quit her job as an education assistant at CBE but she apparently “likes some of the kids” and there are some really fataed ones apparently. She’s got a death cough for three weeks now after a kid sneezed in her face. Definitely not worth what she is paid, fata your crappy kids.
She gets paid f all for all your garbage kids for ten hours a day. How bout you parent a bit? The union should campaign on bad parents.

There is a direct relationship between poor parenting skills and anti-teacher sentiment.

- Government not willing to have meaningful discussion around class size or complexity
- No choice but to continue the strike
- Won't be intimidated by threats of back to work legislation

"We want you to come back to work on the condition we not discuss 2/3 primary pillars for why you're currently striking."
Marlaina will then gaslight the teachers during her press conference this afternoon and paint them as inflexible and unwilling to bargain in good faith.

What's with this government and continuously setting up "commissions"?
Just part of the grift to keep their UCP friends paid?
