A new Iginla or Johnny.

Just going to point out something quickly. You say they need a top pick desperately…

Iggy was drafted 11th overall by another team and acquired in a trade
Johnny was drafted 104th overall

Huge impact on the franchise, for sure, just not really top picks

Flames seem to be playing behind their skis (is that a thing?).

All of those numbers are from MoneyPuck who, based on their formula, has the Flames ranked 15th. Numbers suggest a turnaround.

Cooley was great last night. A lot of pressure on him. Good on him for handling it.
We don’t need fancy math to know they are projected to rank 15th.

Because Flames.

Early days yes, but oof, that's not a fun position for the Sens or their fans.

What I'm not sure about is how it impacts the lottery odds. Do their balls just come out?
That's an interesting question. If the league feels it should keep the same odds, they'd have to keep their balls in and just redo if their numbers come up. If they remove their balls, it increases the odds for everyone.

I believe everything happens the same as usual and Ottawa's picks just goes into the books as a forfeit. So, they could win the lottery and own the first overall pick and the actual first player chosen would be the second-overall pick.

This is what happened when Arizona had to forfeit picks in 2020 and 2021. Coronato was the 12th player chosen in 2021, but he's officially in the books as the 13th overall pick because Arizona owned the 11th overall pick, which was forfeited.

I know the phrase "such a Flames thing to happen" is overused, but finally having the first pick in the draft and it going into the books as the 2nd overall is really such a Flames thing to happen. Actually, the most "Flames thing" would be for them to finally have the third best pick in the draft and it going into the books as 4th overall.

Just don't get the number of drive bys on Farabee.

He's clearly been one of the team's better players in the first five games.

Hopefully the offence comes, but if not he's the next Coleman with his metrics and a solid bottom six (middle six?) piece.

xGF60 3.47 (1st)
xGF% 62.6% (1st)

Huska called him their best player two days ago.

Puzzling to me. Not watching the same things.

I don’t understand our problem, we didn't do anything to address scoring and scoring is still down? Kinda was hoping everyone would start scoring goals using the power of friendship. Bummer. No biggie on to the next strategy.

If the rumors of having the flames be competitive for the opening of Scotia Place are true, they have a mountain of work to do in 2 years time. I don’t see any feasible way the flames can get a top forward line and a top D pair (maybe Parekh takes one spot?). Those are enormous holes to fill in a very short time.

We need to put him in a position to succeed not saddle him with rotating guys who have had poor showings thus far. Heck I'd be okay bringing up Kuznetsov and playing the 2 of them together for a while.
- Agree with putting Zayne on PP1. I'm wondering if they didn't yet because it's literally only the 5th game of the season. Hoping they bump him up soon.

- Agree with the idea of having Zayne with a stable partner, but putting him with either Bahl or Weegar directly goes against putting him in a position to succeed, as going with either of those guys will see him up against Mackinnon-Necas or Nichushkin-Landeskog instead of Parker Kelly-Brindley (as an example). That would be putting Zayne into situations where top 2 lines of teams run up 2-4 points on him whenever he's on the ice by the time the night is over.

I mentioned Farabee just because of his contract and scoring output. Not because of effort. He has been much better than last year but he’s still on the unable to score if his life depended on it list.

I agree, perhaps the hockey gods, or the ghosts of the Montreal forum, or whatever it is that curses us, will use this as an opportunity to bless us with a 1st overall pick because it won't technically be one.

Yeah Farabee has looked pretty good to me too. I guess it's just a symptom of overall team performance thus far that even the best shifts aren't producing any results.

There’s no way the are doing it minus using capspace.

They are definitely taking a patient approach to developing him and getting him adapted to the NHL pace. I guess we too need to be patient to see how this plays out but that's hard! We see Buiiuiiuium and Schneider stepping right in and getting good playing time and we know how good our guy can be so why can't he get the same treatment?

In the end I guess slowly introducing him to more situations and responsibilities isn't going to hurt him but even if he jumped right in it isn't like he would have cost the team. We're 1-4! I hope he gets more time soon.

In 5 years when he's looking dangerous (to other teams) we'll all be like "Remember when we were panicking about them not playing him enough in his first month?"

Gridin is 19 and the NHL isn’t a development league. Giving him some NHL games is a reward for his pre-season play. He’ll likely be sent to the Wranglers for most of the season. The best place for Parekh would probably be the AHL too, but unfortunately that’s not an option.

It’s fun for fans to see young talents play on the Flames. But getting caved in by NHLers night in and night out is a bad way to develop young players.

If he is the next Coleman, great. Play him that way.

No need to play him on the first line and PP1. As a reward sometimes, or when the team needs a kick, sure. Huska has stapled him into spots where he doesn't belong, although that is starting to change.

Folks lamenting the lack of goals see that and get upset. Farabee has unsustainably bad shooting. When that passes, fine. But for now use him where the other parts of his game still work.

Until then, in the wrong spot, Farabee is an easy target for criticism.

But his line as a whole was caved in. And it was his one bad night, really (IMO). It seemed a means to an end to get Zary up the lineup, so I get it, but I don't think he earned that scratch personally.

Gridin has not looked out of place outside of one game where his entire line looked off.

Goalies have been "ok"
Lots of passengers out there
Lots of uninspired hockey to be watched
Enjoy watching the young guys, but we benched the youngest guys for 3 of 5 games now.

I see no reason to panic, if we're not going to be lights out unstoppable I'd much rather avoid mushy middle play we're all accustomed to watch.
I just wish we'd leave the young kids alone and let them play, they're clearly not the problem and this is a season to learn and grow.

I feel like if this keeps up this could be the year to unload a number of veterans looking for that one last shot at a cup:
Andersson
Kadri
Coleman

Then there's another tier of players who don't seem to contribute much at all, and not just for a few games, these guys have been invisible for what seems like forever:

Sharongovich
Farabee
Miromanov

I know its early, but watching these games has been pretty abysmal.
Yes, sadly I do think Huberdeau coming back adds in an element we're desperately missing, but I don't think hes going to be the savior and rumor has it will likely send Gridin back to the AHL.
  1. Zayne needs to be put on PP1 immediately, this is what he's good at. Our PP has been awful and he's averaged only 2 minutes on the PP2 group who get terrible zone time if any at all.
  2. Zayne needs a stable d-partner, give him Bahl (long term) or Weegar for now and let the kid focus on offence. We need to put him in a position to succeed not saddle him with rotating guys who have had poor showings thus far. Heck I'd be okay bringing up Kuznetsov and playing the 2 of them together for a while.
  3. Gridin back in the lineup, he looked good the first few games and then we started switching up lines.. just let the kid play, find him a passer like Frost or Huberdeau and see what happens, but give it more than a game before you start changing the lines again.
  4. Zary needs off the 4th line, again he's the one guy with any sort of zone entry capability and offensive instincts yet we've saddled him on the 4th line for half the games.
  5. Miromanov experiment is over, send him on the mars mission with Dave Cameron and dont look back.
This is a little all over the place.

- It’s been five games, we can still relax about this
- complaining about young guys being benched when a teenager has played every game and often two players 20 or under have makes no sense
- Andersson is 28 years old, not “last chance at a cup” territory
- Farabee has been exactly what you hope for a middle sixer so that complaint seems disconnected from watching the games
- Miromanov has played one game, way too much hand wringing for a guy not taking a spot from anyone
- If Gridin goes down to the AHL that’s fine, he’s struggled more than Parekh and Honzek
- Zayne will get his time, people need to be patient, he also played better with Hanley than Bahl
- Zary came off the fourth line already, he was there because he wasn’t playing well

If people want to look at everything and see the worst interpretation of it that’s fine, but y’all are going to have an extremely rough ride this season if you’re mad that 3rd liners are playing like 3rd liners and that a rookie is a healthy scratch here and there while two others are playing in the game you’re supposed to be watching lol.

I think some of that is he's in spots that Huberdeau will be in when he's back (e.g. on PP1).

I reckon he is fully in that position as a Huberdeau place holder.
