Paska is literally $hit in finnish. So it reads as $hitpoo.

It's absolutely a real name.
The ski hill was named after its location, Paskapoo Slopes. The location was named for the local sandstone, which is part of the Paskapoo Formation. That, in turn, was named after the Blindman River where the sandstone was first discovered. ‘Paskapiw’ is a Cree word meaning ‘He is blind’.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paskapoo_Slopes
If you want to have real fun, there's another word that turns up in a number of place names in Calgary: Shaganappi. It comes from the Cree word for a rawhide thong or cord. But if you say it to an Englishman, he will do a double take and say, ‘Do what to a what?’

Feel like ensuring a good foundation makes things easier going forward. I’m sure everyone here has done some sort of home project that in theory was easy to accomplish but took hours longer than expected because of how long set up takes. If you need to make one cut on a saw, the action takes 1s, but getting everything set up takes 10 minutes, if you have to make a specific jig to ensure your cut is perfect it can even take days. Terrible calculation/example but set up/building the jigs/setting the foundation to a project takes 100x longer than it does to assemble. I feel like once they have got everything laid out the next steps will fly and there will be a skeleton of a building in by next summer with the walls and roof done by next October.

Didn't see this elsewhere.
"Calgary police and border officers carried out immigration checks at the city’s new event centre construction site Wednesday.
The operation aimed to verify workers’ legal status, with police assisting CBSA to ensure safety during the inspection."

I've never heard of this happening in Canada or thought it was an issue here. I mean maybe it is because I am sure there are numerous things that happen that are normal and I don't know about.
For people in the construction industry working on large projects like this, is undocumented foreign labour a thing that happens?

On the CTV news they had an expert on and he mentioned that it’s common out east but very rare for Calgary.

I could name a large construction site in Calgary where agents would need extra busses to haul away the undocumented workers, who are “paid” under minimum wage and safety is an option. Some companies have reputations for doing this.

It's a bit early for the ICE.

I feel bad for the undocumented workers. Watching that video about black market labour in Alberta, it seems like many, maybe most come over with the best intentions and then get screwed over by the employer all for the sake of cutting costs.

Agreed 100%. They’re just trying to provide for their families and are taken advantage of with false promises.

Danielle Smith is our premier, though. We're probably under 12 months from that ghoulish party implementing their own version of ICE here in Alberta. They are true psychopaths who are following everything Trump has done and implemented.

Ha. My kid works on the project but wasn't there that day, will be interesting to hear what he finds out when he gets back. Not that it necessarily means anything but he has mentioned that English is not the only language commonly spoken on site.

Yeah, in the video they describe how some workers (both foreign and Canadian) worked their way up for years to get valuable experience and the proper licenses to be skilled experts, but some employers are pushing them aside for under qualified and inexperienced workers because they can force them to accept less money. It hurts everyone. It hurts the experienced workers and foreign workers that did what they needed to do to justify more compensation and provide quality work. And it hurts the newer foreign workers who are not getting the opportunities to advance their career or the proper training to be safe on the job. I imagine it could potentially affect the quality of the work when experience and skilled workers are shut out. It also hurts the tax payers because workers being paid cash under the table aren't contributing taxes.
The video is created by the union, so I realize the narrative is from their perspective. But if what they say is accurate, then it sounds like a problem that needs regulating agencies to step in. My hope is that if or when the non-citizen workers working under the table are found, that they are treated with dignity and allowed to continue, but with the rights and protections from regulators they deserve, and not just deported.

I had a British friend that would always chuckle whenever someone said Shaganappi. She couldn't help herself.

4 undocumented workers found. CBSA says they were acting on a tip and they typically do these workplace investigations 5 or 6 times a year.

To be fair this isn't an Alberta problem only and is more prominent in other provinces. As per the story linked above.
