I was thinking a bit about ICE last night, and I was wondering whether this is just an excuse to arm and reward the most extreme trump supporters.
Are there any checks on who they hire? Are they just deputing extremist militia members and Jan 6th people?
It seems this is a military/police force entirely beholden to Trump.
That may explain the reason to pay exorbitant wages, another way to reward these extrmjsts.
You said it in the bolded part.
I don't think he cares about rewarded these losers; they're just a tool for seizing complete power.
All levels of military, police, legal system, medical, everything else are to be beholden to the administration. Game over democracy.

Having a personal paramilitary force with little to no legal oversight is a basic way for dictators to overrun all "checks and balances" and just bypass the existing law enforcement and legal systems. This is especially necessary in the early stages of a dictatorship, when power is not yet absolute and the existing systems haven't yet been sufficiently purged.

Gestapo

That exactly what it compares to. It won't be too long before they are the morality police rounding up anyone declared an enemy of MAGA. They will probably be supervising election polls and occupying the Capitol when the next transfer of power is supposed to happen.

SA (i.e. the Brownshirts) in the early days, then the SS (after Hitler agreed to disband the SA in return for loyalty of the Reichswehr)
No Brown Shirts, once you have absolute power you then create the Gestapo to slaughter the Brown Shirts, that comes in a couple of years time when you have gotten away with suspending elections
edit: just saw #22's post

Dementia Don needs to get some fact checkers before he posts. Where did he get this idea? Oh, I dunno, probably trickled down to him from the ever popular hollow head, Joe Rogan's recent stream of scatology.
Quote:
American Patriot Joe Rogan claims federal government was responsible for Jan 6th Insurrection on recent pod with former CIA officer. Rogan states that inside agents were used as a way to demonize and criminalize Donald Trump.
Check out Rachel Maddow’s podcast episode with Illinois Gov. Pritzker about Trump’s intention to move ICE and military into Illinois. Scary as ****.
I am a green-card holder, living in Chicago. My wife is a naturalized US Citizen from Latin America. We have no legal reason to worry about ICE, but, obviously, we live in the dumbest goddamn timeline. We have yet to personally encounter ICE, but every single days we're checking placed like reddit and bluesky to get updates about where they've been spotted.
Just yesterday my wife went to practice one of her hobbies in Logan Square which could be roughly equated to like Kensington in Calgary. A vibrant, youthful part of town with great amenities. She got an alert that ICE had released pepper spray & tear gas six minutes from where she was.
With ICE, and with everything this administration is doing the cruelty is the point. I do not know if I will ever be able to forgive the people who voted for this and who still support it.

Sorry to hear, man. Have you been considering leaving? You kind of sound like the demographic ICE would have no problem disappearing.
Yeah, even as a white Canadian guy I am concerned about encountering ICE. Yesterday they were at Midway airport holding flights and pulling people off planes. The day before that they grabbed a family in the parking lot of a Costco. Anyone who tries to make the claim that they are targeting criminals is completely full of ####.
My wife and I have already started making plans to head for Europe. Somewhat paradoxically, it's better for me to wait and get US citizenship before leaving, because then we can come back here any time. If we leave prior to doing that, I lose the green card and then have to reapply for it before returning, which is about a two-year process if you're doing it from outside the US.
