I'll preface this with I'm comfortable playing the kids and getting them experience, so mushy middle play doesn't excite me this year anyway.
I'd rather lose games and see growth than play .350 hockey all season long.

But for those who want wins, you know who would help the Flames right now, though many seem to be extremely down on him: Robertson

More finish than Coronato who's easily our best.
Generates offense on his own, playing with a pass first guy like Huby or Frost would be ideal candidate for him.
Kadri may work as well, but Kadri also loves the puck on his stick as much as possible

Both teams have had numerous chats since the summer.

Just saying.

Getting any kind of top line talent on this team couldn't hurt

I'm giddy with the anticipation of the eventual Rasmus Andersson trade.

Call it whatever you want I guess but what the flames are doing is not the same as the Hawks and Sharks.
The rebuilding Sharks who traded a 3rd round draft pick for a 29 year old goalie, traded a 3rd and a 6th for a 25 year old dman, traded a 1st round pick and a 19 year old former first round pick for a 22 year old goalie, a 4th round pick for a 23 year old forward. All those trades were done in the last 15 months which is a lot of futures moved out for a team that is not doing that.

The hawks moved out a 6th round pick for a 30 year old forward. They acquired a 30 year old forward for a 25 year old forward.

The Hawks just really have not done anything, have not really moved anyone other than Jones and have not acquired anyone. But either way, neither of those teams burned it to the ground anymore than the Flames and under any objective criteria the Flames moved more pieces out in the last 2 years than they did over any 2 year period.

But the Flames did move a 2nd round pick so there is that.

I think Robertson would be a really exciting acquisition. If the Stars and the player are unable to get close on his next contract then it makes sense for them to move him but there are 3 paths forward for the Stars:

1) Sign Robertson to a big extension (probably $12+M AAV) - This would be good because it locks up their core players for the long run
2) Go to arbitration and sign Robertson for 1 year - This would keep their core together for this season and next and then Robertson walks to UFA (or they try and find a trade partner before he walks)
3) Trade Robertson now and make the contract negotiations someone else's problem

Thing is, if Robertson is being traded out, the Stars need a #1LW, #2LW, and #1/2RD and cap space to fit them all on the roster. That is a tough shopping list.

I wish there was a few bad contracts 1-3 years in duration for serviceable players that we could obtain bundled with picks.

The NHL just had to announce a cap increase when the Flames finally have an abundance of previously super valuable cap space.

Some teams have still taken on contracts, granted it has been at a lower premium than in other years.

I think it’s fair to say that while the Flames may have some willingness to do this, their asking price is high. I guess they did with Kuznetsov, and that probably helped get them Brustewicz.

Agreed two different classes of players. Roberson is much better a hockey player then Anderson

Robertson would just make us more of a mushy middle team. Hard pass.

We need to tank a few year first before acquiring players like this.

Robertson is talented no doubt but his lack of speed leaves me cold.

Any thought of Robertson coming here is just fantasy, unless it is part of a paper transaction, three way deal.

He’ll go to San Jose or Chicago if it’s a team on the upswing. But more likely he’ll go to an Eastern contender.

We would have to add a lot to Ras, and that would hurt the rebuild more than Robertson would help it.

Obviously just theoretical, but the idea of a line of Robertson-Frost-Coronato makes me dream a little bit

Potter? - ? - Robertson
Gridin - Reschny? - Coronato

That’s a good start to a top-six long term.

I mean, if we can acquire Robertson without significant future assets leaving, I’m into it.

I also don’t think the Flames, even with Robertson, get excluded from a bottom-10 finish.

This team has structural issues that adding another winger is not going to fix, and I don’t think they’ll be able to outplay those deficiencies (lack of top-pairing defenceman, lack of high end centre depth). I think the Pacific division is going to punish the Flaes this year, hard.

Subtracting Raz, and adding Robertson does not significantly change this teams immediate struggles in my eyes…so, I’m for him. I think if we snag him, we still finish bottom-10.

This is the reality of a potential acquisition. If the Flames were pursuing such an acquisition it almost certainly ends poorly for the team. The Stars appear to be handling this properly, so if a deal is made it’s before the deadline this year and it will cost significant assets. Andersson, + 1st, +, is the likely cost at this time, and the 1st, +, seems to be about what an expected return could be for Robertson as a rental next season. That’s giving away Andersson for a few months of Robertson. That’s might work for a handful of contenders, but that isn’t where this team is.

I have more faith in the current management group than to think they get in this pool. If Conroy did entertain such a deal it would signal to me that he’s being tasked with winning now and incomplete builds tend to result in more building. I trust all involved in the process know this.

No way Conroy trades for Robertson without an extension agreed upon. He isn't that dumb.

Ya, I keep coming back to my last proposition which was booed down pretty quick.

Andersson (50%) + Huberdeau (20%) + LW prospect (Stromgren?)

for

Robertson + Bischel + Lyubushkin

Stars get a cost controlled first line LWer with 6 years of control who just put up a 28 goal season and will probably put up a lot more points on a stacked Stars team along with a top 4 RD who can help address the gap in the Stars D group. Stromgren (or whoever we need to put in that LW prospect spot) will likely get a chance in the NHL immediately to see if they can take the #2LW spot.

Also, the Stars get over $20M in cap space between the retention of $2M per year for 6 years of Huberdeau, $2.4M for 1 year of Andersson, and the cap dump of $3.25M for 2 years of Lyubushkin. Because of the amount of money the Flames are gifting the Stars, I do not think a better LW prospect is needed. Having a cost controlled Huberdeau would also give the Stars enough cap space to extend Andersson, Harley, Lundvkist, and Bourque (unless Bourque has a massive breakout year).

Flames get Robertson and Bischel (and have to figure out what to do with Lyubushkin for 2 years).

Depending on how you view the value of the $20M in cap space I think it balances pretty well.

Pretty bad for the Stars. They’d just sign Robertson instead of taking on Huberdeau’s contract.
