Ownership remains terrified that there will be far fewer in attendance to sell pocket dogs too.Young Guns era scarred them.

How many years can you try to lose though, from a management perspective. This will be the 3rd year that the team has more or less gone scorched earth.

I'm not under the impression that they've gone scorch earth at all and I don't think they're necessarily trying to lose. Conroy tried to make moves, but most of them didn't pan out.

They made the Frost + Farabee acquisition.

They tried to re-sign Vladar but he wanted more opportunity.
Allegedly they were close on a deal to send Rasmus out and bring Hague back but that fell through because Hague didn't want to come.
They went deep in trade talks for K'Ander Miller but the Canes had a big offer.
They made a seriously competitive offer to Lindgren but he went somewhere else.

Takes multiple parties to tango.

This team has been very competitive in 2/3 of those years. They could use a couple year to scrape bottom.

Not sure Vladar is a sign that you are trying to compete.

There has been no serious reporting on the Hague rumour nor the Miller rumour you cite.

And a team that wants to compete would just have used some of their abundance of cap room to close the deal on Lindgren if that rumour is true. A team that wants to compete and has the draft picks and prospects that the Flames have by selling almost all of their good players and getting nothing back that can help them compete now would move those young assets and picks for players that help them compete now.

The reason they have not done that is because they are not actually trying to compete now and instead are getting rid of more vets than any team in the cap era has for picks and prospects.

Yeah I dont think theyre trying to seriously compete either. But tthey're not going scorched earth. There's alot of room between the two.

The rumours were pretty substantive with reputable members close to the flames (Steinberg) and the top media insiders (friedman, dreger and serevalli) saying things. They were also deep in Cozens and Byram.

Lindgren proffered to play in thr US apparently. Same with Hague.

They did get players back though. Bahl, Sharangovich, Frost, Farabee and Miromanov (bust). That's 3 top 9 forwards and a top 4 D that they got back.

Net out since Conroy came in for players isb

Toffoli, Zadorov, Lindholm, Hanifin, Tanev, Markstrom, Mangiapane.

Net in is Farabee, Frost, Bahl, Sharangovich and I guess Miromanov. One of those lists is much more of a win now list than the other list. The players that got brought in more reflect the reality that teams often want to move a contract back than it reflects a Flamws desire to compete.

More than any team I can remember (or has ever been cited as an example on this forum) the Flames are in a scorched earth, sell the assets rebuild. Suppose it is possible to sell even more assets than the Flames have but no team has really ever done that.

There absolutely has been reporting on the Hague and Miller stuff Dreger said more than once on barnburner if the Canes did not threaten the offer sheet the Flames were likely getting Miller. Rangers probably preferred to not trade in-division but had little choice once the offer sheet threat occurred.

I believe it was Friedman who reported that Hague not being willing to sign in Calgary was the reason the Andersson trade fell through.

I do think there has been attempts to improve this team through targeted players but when they fell through Conroy did not force anything.

Well I guess if an insider said it it must have happened. It is strange that Conroy, a guy with 3 firsts, 2 seconds and 3 thirds over the next two years and more prospects than you can shake a stick at could not close the deal for Miller if he was actually truly interested in him and wanted to improve the team. Especially if the Rangers did not want to trade in the division.

The scenario you have for Miller is that Conroy was deep into trying to get him and seriously wanted Miller, the Canes threatened an offer sheet, the Rags did not want to trade him in the division but also did not want to lose him to an offer sheet, Conroy seriously wanting him could not make an offer that enticed the Rags to trade him outside the division and then the Rags traded him inside their division despite not wanting to.

I personally choose to believe what Conroy has actually done in real life (the biggest tear down rebuild in salary cap memory) rather than what has been reported as to what he tries to do but fails at. Largely because the reports make no logical sense when you play them out.

Insiders report very little what they actually hear and I believe much of what they do report are pretty credible takes.

Miller being a RFA had some say in what he wanted to do and maybe once the Canes approached his people he preferred that situation to the one in Calgary? It was pretty clear the Flames were looking for long term left shot Dmen last summer but couldn’t get Miller, Hague, Byram, or Lindgren which is why they circled to Hanley and brought him back.

Conroy might go down as the GM most criticized in history for the moves he reportedly made but didn’t actually make.

It's going to be a long season on the ice, and interminably longer on this board.

Would probably help if basically everything that this management even thinks about doing wasn't leaked. I've never been so "informed" about Flames management's activities until this one. Even just on this niche fan site the amount of posters who seem to have regular scoops is weird.

That is a false statement.

They have moved just about every vet that did not have trade protection and their starting goalie who did. It has also been pointed out that Conroy has moved out more vets than any other team in any recent "rebuild".

The only vets that are still on the team from when Conroy started are the ones with NMC/NTC. Expecting him to trade those players is a failing on your part, not on Conroy's.

Every player Conroy traded except one was on an expiring deal. Many only after failed attempts an an extension. The one player that wasn't a pending UFA was due to the three goalie situation.

All lf that was done in Conroy's first season. He has made one trade in the last 15 months and the Flames have NEVER been open for business under Conroy.

Agree or disagree with the direction. But the Flames have not intentionally been rebuilding. Yes Conroy was busy in his first year, but he had little choice due to the expiring contracts and goalie situation.

Who was critizing CC? I assume youre referring to me

I was countering the poster who said the flames are in a burn it down rebuild with examples of Conroy trying to make moves to improve the team.

I never said anything regarding if these were good or bad moves?

That is not a scorched earth rebuild though. That's retooling to get younger. A burn it down team doesn't move out a 2nd rounder for frost and farabee.

Call it whatever you want I guess but what the flames are doing is not the same as the Hawks and Sharks.

I made no statements of expectations.

I just said what they're doing is not a scorched earth rebuild. They are making building moves still and not just tear down moves, for example moving out a 2nd for Frost + Farabee.

THERE WAS 0 CRITICISM.
