The Wild will regret at least 3 years of that contract.
And they will not win a cup in that timeframe.

I feel like this was an owner stepping in. Crazy contract the day it was signed.

Yup. The Wild need multiple Stanley Cup runs to make this make sense. I don't see it.

If the Wild didn’t pay him, he walks next summer to a team that would (and there are other teams that were willing to pay $16mil+).
So now a team that won 5 playoff rounds in the last 20 years loses the best player in franchise history, and they’re rebuilding. Sometimes it isn’t as easy as playing an NHL GM simulator.

That’s not the only alternative to signing him. Come on, you can do better than that. Don’t conjure Cliff’s name and give us that take.

It's a massive contract, but let's not overdo it.
One Stanley Cup in that time period would be worth an entire roster filled with bad 8-year contracts for 99% of NHL teams if that's what it took to win one Cup.
For a mid-destination like the Wild, who's best result in team history is making the 3rd round 23 years ago, locking up their best, most exciting player in team history is worth whatever price to the organization, especially one that probably needs to view the league more from the true entertainment business it is rather that allocating what's probably at worse only a few million dollars per season a bit better throughout their roster

IDK you have to draw the line at some point...16M should have been that point IMO

Currently 6 points after 2 games, lol. Obviously two games means nothing, but I really do think he is a way better player than most of you armchair CP guys understand. Everyone acted like he was some nobody that came out of nowhere and got $17mi AAV. He's one of the best point producers in the league.

I doubt anyone suggested he wasn't a high end talent but he's not the best player in the league either, him getting $17m is going to screw a lot of teams.

How many years of NHL front office experience do you have?

I don’t think it’ll screw anyone, as noted in the post before he didn’t exactly set the market. Teams signing comparable impact players have bottom 4 D money left over. That’s as far as it’ll go for the Wild, they’ll be a bit more capstrung due to this for depth players. They have Boldy signed to a good deal too so it might balance out.
They paid above market to keep their own guy, despite having term advantage, which is funny to me as a rival fan. But it won’t be a huge deal, and they didn’t set a trend.

yeah it obviously hasn't reset the market yet. Thought Connor and Eichel would get more than they eventually did, and McDavid obviously took a big discount on a short deal, so the Kaprizov deal is kind of on an island at the moment. But keeping him was huge for the Wild and with a rising cap, I'd imagine the contract will look a lot better in two or three years.

McDavid is clearly an outlier but you can’t argue with Eichel and Kyle Connor. Especially Kyle Connor… in ####ing Winnipeg…

You don't think that Calgary would have signed him for $17M if they could have gotten him for nothing?
For most teams, it's not Stanley Cup or nothing. They are also running a business.
Calgary's moves are not the best to build a potential Stanley Cup team. We know it and management knows it. But ownership would rather do more of a retool so they don't fall to the bottom of the league.
The Wild are doing the exact same thing.

It's just a matter of some Flames fans not necessarily plugged into the rest of the NHL as others. People that pay attention to the rest of the NHL know he's one of the best players in the game and worth every penny to an organization like the Wild.
