Default For All You Bottled Water Fans: Labels to Spell Out Aquafina Source - Tap Water

Surprise surprise...

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...hub=TopStories

PepsiCo Incorporated has decided to be transparent about the fact that its Aquafina bottled water product is made from tap water.

The move is widely seen as a compromise to demands from environmental advocates and political opponents who are growing increasingly critical of the industry.

...

"In direct response to a national day of action yesterday, Pepsi agreed to spell out "Public Water Source" on the Aquafina label."

...

In fact, the group claims, 40 per cent of bottled water uses tap water as its source.

This has been known for a long time, just no one would admit to it like Pepsi is about to.

There are actually more regulations for tap water than bottle water, I only drink bottled water for my convience not because its better.

I fill my water bottle up at the fountain because it's more convenient than walking to the store and paying $2.50.

Coke got a lot of bad press when they released Dasani in the UK and it hit the papers that it came from teh same source as the local tap water. Coke tried to explain that they did additional filtering, and so on, but it was too late and they pulled the brand after a few weeks.

I'll buy water when I have neglected to bring along my own water bottle, but then I generally keep the bottle and refill it from my Brita a bunch of times.

just out of curiosity, is it filtered tap water, treated in some other way, or is it just straight out of the tap?

I read that for Dasani it's filtered through a reverse osmosis proces that's 10 times better than ones used to desalinate water for drinking. I'm sure the other places do something to it as well to justify the price premium.

No big deal. I buy the Costco bottled water for the bottles. Then I just reuse with tap water until I consider the bottle to be 'dirty'. I actually prefer my own water in the bottle....

From the article:

Through its Think Outside the Bottle Campaign, the group has objected to the fact that Aquafina labels feature an image of snow-capped mountains with the words "pure water, perfect taste," suggesting the source is a mountain spring, when in fact it is purified municipal water.

and

Pepsi's Aquafina and beverage industry leader Coca-Cola's Dasani are both made by purifying water that comes from public reservoirs.

Pepsi's Aquafina and beverage industry leader Coca-Cola's Dasani are both made by purifying water that comes from public reservoirs. By comparison, Danone's Evian and Nestle's Poland Spring brands are labelled as "spring waters" and are tapped from locations said to have especially pure water.

Bottled water is better. Maybe it's just a mental thing, but I can't sit at home with a glass of water from the kitchen sink and enjoy it more than a bottle. I just cant.

I used to work for Pepsi and knew that it was filtered tap water. Basically if you have a 'connetico' system like the one they hock on Q107 all the time it's the same thing. It is filtered water so hey, why not. I don't buy Aquafina or Dasani for taste but rather because I hit up a convience store on the road and need a portable cold water. Water that mentions it's spring and specifically mentions where they get it from is legit and tastes better than tap water.

I drink bottled water because I would rather avoid the fluoride added to calgarys tap water.

The only bottled water that is superior IMO is FIJI water...that is some good stuff.

Otherwise if it doesn't say spring water than it is likely just municipal water...

To be honest, I still prefer the taste of Aquafina over Evian, Dasani or such.....perhaps because it actually is tap water - I hate water that tastes like minerals. I only buy it when travelling tho, otherwise I just fill up my sports bottle from the cooler at work or at home.

Yeah, put me in the "bottled water for convenience" camp as well. Once a year I buy a 30 pack from Walmart for $5 and keep a bunch of it in the fridge. Buying in bulk like that it works out to something like 17˘ per bottle which is nothing. I do usually refill some of them with tap water.

My rabbit gets bottled water; but partly because she drinks so little it really doesn't cost me much; a 65˘ bottle lasts her a couple of weeks. Also my last rabbit before her died suddenly within days of the city changing from chlorine in the water to that new chemical- chlorimate (or something.) Not sure it was a factor in his death, but I'm also not going to take any chances either. With bottled water it's consistant.

Our work provides bottled water for us, we get Nestle Pure Life water. It says natural spring water on the bottles, and its bottled in BC. It tastes pretty good but I actually like Dasani the best, even if it is municiple water that is filtered.

I'm not a deep end environmentalist by any stretch of the imagination, but even I won't buy that stuff.

http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/...-a-bottle.html

Quote:
The label on a bottle of Fiji Water says "from the islands of Fiji." Journey to the source of that water, and you realize just how extraordinary that promise is. From New York, for instance, it is an 18-hour plane ride west and south (via Los Angeles) almost to Australia, and then a four-hour drive along Fiji's two-lane King's Highway.

Every bottle of Fiji Water goes on its own version of this trip, in reverse, although by truck and ship. In fact, since the plastic for the bottles is shipped to Fiji first, the bottles' journey is even longer. Half the wholesale cost of Fiji Water is transportation--which is to say, it costs as much to ship Fiji Water across the oceans and truck it to warehouses in the United States than it does to extract the water and bottle it.

That is not the only environmental cost embedded in each bottle of Fiji Water. The Fiji Water plant is a state-of-the-art facility that runs 24 hours a day. That means it requires an uninterrupted supply of electricity--something the local utility structure cannot support. So the factory supplies its own electricity, with three big generators running on diesel fuel. The water may come from "one of the last pristine ecosystems on earth," as some of the labels say, but out back of the bottling plant is a less pristine ecosystem veiled with a diesel haze (...)

Fiji Water produces more than a million bottles a day, while more than half the people in Fiji do not have reliable drinking water.
