I understand why Wolf was picked for the back to back, but I do think he shouldn’t have still been out there for the final two goals when the game was already lost.

Plenty here have conveniently forgotten the 2008 and 2009 playoffs where his playoff stats started to decline.

Yeah, posting career stats does nothing for this discussion. It was a huge topic of conversation in those years, for good reason.

And if burnout isn't/wasn't a factor, why do people think no goalies play more than 65 games now? The answer is to stay fresh for the playoffs. Period.

Lessons get learned.

Counterpoint: the Flames don't have to worry about playoffs this year

Kipper was 31 in 2008/2009, soooo yes I would not start Wolf back to back to begin the season when he is 31 years old.

There’s a reason goalies - no matter how good they are - don’t get 60+ starts anymore*. Modern goaltending technique puts tremendous stress on their bodies. Winning a few more games over the next couple years isn’t worth increasing the risk of Wolf developing chronic hip problems that need to be corrected with surgery.

* Vasilevsky and Saros have edged over that 60 number in recent years, but their play has suffered as a consequence.

Over the past 5 full NHL seasons there have been 28 instances of goalies playing 60+ games, including four instances of goalies playing 65+.

Saros/Vasilevsky combined only account for 6 of those 28 instances.

He's right on the main point that it's a bad idea though. Especially for a goalie who becomes a starter at 23, as Wolf did, which for a goalie is on the earlier side. Look at the guy in the other net on Thursday - Demko became a full time starter at age 26, and despite only playing 60+ games once, has broken down in multiple ways. He's probably a bit of an outlier because he's always had hip problems, but the same does happen to a lot of goalies. Wear and tear is a real thing, unless you're Marc Andre Fleury, and there's a decent argument even in his case that his regular workload was a detriment to the quality he could give you each year.

Since Wolf is only 6 feet, that probably helps him with wear and tear on joints a bit compared to the 6'3"+ guys, but it's still a long road at a very demanding position and the difference between starting 50 games a season and 60+ is huge. Save those higher-workload seasons for years when the team is a contender IMO.
