Yeah Vegas is setup pretty nicely going forward.

We will have lots of cap going forward but no superstars to poach.

Kaprizov had Minnie over a barrel. They have some good players but he's the only marketable star. And he's better than Eichel. Plus Eichel isn't really the face of the Knights. That's still Stone.

He also didnt go UFA
If Eichel got there and opened himself up to any team he could have got basically anything he wanted. Eichel is also a center.

Stone's days are numbered

Taxes -

Eichel's net is about 8.5M
Kaprizov's is 9M

You'd think the NHL would have to resolve this at some point.

Being clever with residence, Kaprizov's tax bill is probably less/net is more, but it remains material.

McDavid's net (assuming full year residency in AB is 6.5M)

The Wild couldn’t let him walk. And there are rumours that a team was floating $20 mil /year to Kaprizov.

Contenders usually get a discount to keep elite players. Mid-tier teams like the Wild don’t.

I'm not sure. The best players on Vegas are locked up long-term and are all currently 28-33. It's a great roster this year and next, but it is also one that could blow up and slow down big time as injuries and father time wreaks havoc. Same goes for the Oilers and Panthers.

That's what you have to pay a guy to stay where he doesn't want to be though.

I just don't think much of Eichel. Kaprizov was leading the league in points when he went down.

It is fun that Eichel makes more than McDavid though.

Here's to an epic, legendary VGK collapse this year somehow. Give us that high first round draft pick!

Until the Flames new core is ready for UFA

Another problem with the Kaprisov deal is that he's a winger.
It's generally better to pay centers than wingers IMO. Contending teams shouldn't have too much money on the wing - they can only do so much other than produce offense.

Yup it's the combination of:

-Small, unfavorable market
- Team that hasn't won / hasn't been a contender
- Unfavorable tax situation
- Elite Player

Really Kaprizov had no reason to stay unless it was a complete overpay

Good.

Kane going to the Oiler's for almost nothing with McDavid and Draisatl at 26-28yrs old was far scarier than the above FA class possibly being interested in Edmonton if there is no other offers.

I expect Kempe will be extended soon. Necas if he plays well will be the same.

Does that include things like the “jock tax” though? Aside from creative things that can be done, some of the taxes these guys have to pay are unavoidable and not based on residency.
