Oh for sure. Lots of blame to go around on that one.

And not a hot take saying that Ernie Clement makes that catch if he was still at third and not second, because the manager figures a pinch hitter is a good idea in the third inning in a 5 run lead game, which changes the infield defense.

Varland gets the start tomorrow, just announced.
Guessing it’ll be Lauer right after

Not sure I like that. Varland has looked progressively worse in the three games he’s pitched in. He’ll be running on fumes and adrenaline tomorrow. Hoping for the best for a guy who’s pitched high leverage in 3 games in 4 days.

Yeah, that's a scary choice to start the game.

Varland will go through the order once at most depending on pitch count, but yes you risk not having him for game 5 regardless. Then yes it should be Lauer for a few innings. From that point, a hope and a prayer.

Varland's last batter, assuming the same Yankee lineup, will likely be Stanton, whenever that happens.

Varland makes me really nervous. I wonder if we see Gausman tonight for a bulk role?

Absolutely not. We may need him and Yesavage for Friday night if the pen can't do it tonight. Our best bet is getting to Schlittler as we have done in the past. I think our bullpen figures it out tonight, they've bounced back before.

I think that's pretty unlikely - he would be on short rest and hasn't really been a reliever. I think that only happens if its going to extra innings or something like that. They should have all the relievers available, and will be willing to ride anyone who is pitching well.
Plus if you use him today and lose that puts us in a bad spot for game 5.

I get that, but I think Gausman is more valuable to this series than an insurance policy on Yesavage for game 5.

I don't think he's an insurance policy
The plan is Gausman starts game 5, and then Yesavage comes in.

I could see either scenario playing out. I also wonder how well they pair together given both of their reliance on the splitter?

Yeah, that's sort of unfortunate. Although the arm slots are so different that maybe it isn't a big issue?
I'm a bit concerned about Varland to start. I feel like the top of the Yankees order just saw him yesterday, and if he makes it to Stanton that'll be the 3rd time Stanton sees him in the series.

Listened to Dan Shulman's segment on 960 this morning. Obviously its just his opinion, but his thoughts were the Jays are almost certainly saving Gausman/Yesavage for a game 5 tandem, and that tonight you will see Varland followed by Lauer, then some combo of Fluharty, Little, Domiguez, Rodruiguez, Fisher, and Hoffman.
Using Gausman tonight will lower his effectiveness. Short rest, versus a day of extra rest on Friday.

The guy they talked to on Jays Talk Plus brought up putting in Gausman tonight too. I don't see it happening though.
I really wish now they would have put Bassitt on the playoff roster instead of Bruihl as an insurance policy. I know I've been hard on him when he struggles but when he's good he can be really good and historically he's been really good against the Yankees.
Varland could do what he did to Boston and put the team in a good position or he could get rocked and put the team in a hole quick.

I think people are overlooking the fact that the Jays are still up in the series and have the best home record in MLB. They are not going to empty the chamber tonight and use Gausman and/or Yesavage and leave themselves shorthanded in a winner take all game at home on Friday. I didn't think the Jays would sweep. Obviously they pissed away the game yesterday with questionable managerial calls and shoddy defense. If you don't trust your high leverage arms this game, how are you going to trust them on Friday when you need to win to advance? I believe they'll win tonight, but it'll be a grind.
