They don’t have to worry this year. They don’t have to worry next year. That is two years.
Honestly it’s not that hard, he signed a two year extension. If he signed a one year extension, they would have gained one year of certainty (this year).
This didn’t have to “worry” last year, he could not have signed an extension.

Again, they were talking about the extension. Not the extension plus this season.

Why would you ignore this season? He is signed for three more years.
In their comment, they literally said they will be in the same boat two years from now.

Because they're just talking about the extension. They wanted him to sign long term so he could retire with his bff.

As in worrying about if he even lasts the season with the Oilers or worse he plays out the season but walks and they get nothing.

So did they gain certainty for this season or not?
Three days ago - no certainty.
Today - certainty for next two seasons.
All because he signed an extension, no other reason.
Maybe they meant they only gained one off season of certainty, I suppose that is true.

I will admit tho, I didn’t see him actually taking less to stay in Edmonton. Pleasantly surprised even though E always = NG.

McDavid just went to back-to-back cup finals, you can hate Edmonton (lol no good!!!!!!) as much as you want but he sees value in trying to do it a couple more years with relatively the same group. Personally I don't know if it's the smartest move, Edmonton hasn't built a great team around him, they drafted Draisaitl the year before and they've ridden those two.
Now obviously money isn't an issue for him but a player should always get their value or close to it. McDavid left money so they could built a team around him, and that money is instantly wasted on Jake Wallen.

I understand it perfectly. They are idiots if they think this year shouldn't be counted. The calendar has been extended by two years, not one.

Exactly, he was never going 2x20. Any deal this short would have been 15-16 so yes its a discount but Walman gets a 3.6M raise...its gone. The media is acting like they are getting some star player now.
Its all optics...23M cap sounds nice. Except its for 9 players including both goalies and #1 D man

Not when the length of the extension is what they're concerned about.
Everyone knows he still has this year, but again it's about how long they have him when his extension starts that they're talking about.

Can anyone explain the Oilers rush to sign Walman
Like did they think he would outplay a 7x7 deal this year ? Why not wait and see .
Is there even a 1% risk someone pays him more than 49 million in the offseason ?
It’s just bad / wierd / nonsensical - even for them

He was going to play this current season without a contract but they just went to the finals...if they do worse the next two seasons (the most likely outcome) it gets a little awkward going into that final year for both sides.
One extra crack is all that is guranteed at the moment...heck like I said they have to fill half a roster next season, even an average season this year makes it a tough sell if they are bargain hunting.

They have him for two years when the extension starts.
Two years from now, they will be in the same position they are in now. That's two extra years.

Now it seems like you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.
I've already told you numerous times but you continue to to ignore it. When they say it's like a one year extension, they're talking about one year of not having to worry about not being able to re-sign him to a new contract. They wanted him to re-sign longer so they didn't have to worry about him leaving unless he demands a trade.
He could end up playing both years whether he ends up leaving or not or they could be forced into moving him after the first or halfway through the second if he wants out.
Hopefully he plays the full two years and then bolts leaving them with nothing.
