I am not sure what would possess McCrap to sign such a low figure. There has to be something fishy going on here. I get the hometown discount, I really do, and I appreciate it when some of the Flames sign less than market deals, but his is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than market and doesn't make any sense.

And, to top it off, I honestly had to google Walman ... I know he has been in the league for a while, but I honestly wanted to know what he did to get such a high payday. I gave up trying to find out.

I am extremely grateful not to have be a fan of that abomination up north.

He was also benefiting from Kraft funneling money into TB12 Sports which was likely how money was being transferred under the table to offset the lower salary. NFL investigated but the paper trail cleared them but it's not really that hard to circumvent as these billionaire owners spend a lot of time with their lawyers circumventing taxes and circumventing a league salary cap is a walk in the park in comparison. I suspect that McDavid is getting some under the table benefits from Katz.

For all the people complaining about McDavid, that contract discount was huge. Taking a third less is a lot of money to be giving up. I think it’s admirable. I’m not sure I would give up that much but it’s nice.

Unfortunately I'd suspect the other owners would be all over the circumvention.

The evidence just points to him not being very bright.

If he wanted to help the team...why handcuff them all summer by not signing?

If you want to max dollars under the new cap, why take such a low number now, and have the deal end when your 32yrs old?

If you wanted to leave room...well they blew 25% of the extra room you generated less than 24hrs after the announcement

I mean even giving them another 3 chances at it doesn't even sound like an ultimatum when you total it up over his career and it'll be 15 chances and theyre out

Trade him? Maybe...but you’re still hollowing out the new team.

I actually feel bad for his agent...how do explain this deal without throwing the guy under the bus?

The Oilers will be leaving their contention window just as the Flames are hopefully building towards theirs. The key is, them not winning one between now and then.
Your dreaming Jir, where are the flames getting their all star centre from or the all star winger from. The only way is to tank and tank hard which most people and the club have no wish to do.Three years time and and you still have our very expensive not very good winger on the books and properly Kadre. Contending is not happening until we get a proper star centre.

I am anticipating the discussions out of Edmonton (and Sportsnet) in November asking “Has Walman played himself into the Olympic team discussion?”, even though he’ll be his usual #4 self.

Yeah unfortunately I don't see a flames contention window anywhere close either. Last window was built around three real high picks in bennett tkachuk and monahan and one late steal in gaudreau. Flames battle to stay in the mushy middle this time has meant there are really no blue chip forward prospects in the organization at all, though I know we are all hoping someone like gridin, reschny or potter turn out to be a play driver at nhl level.

I think this could be the year a rebuild actually starts though as the core that's been keeping them competitive ages even more and guys like coleman and andersson finally get traded

I didn't say they would be contending at that time. I said this: "The Oilers will be leaving their contention window just as the Flames are hopefully building towards theirs."

Still building, but getting closer. On the upswing.

Hopefully you are right and scouting knocks some late picks out of the park or the Flames finally bottom out. Hard to see a way out of this mess right now that doesn't lead to middle ground with how good wolf is. Hopefully he absolutely stones the oilers here and kicks them in the balls while they are all patting themselves on the back for their shrewd negotiating this week and takes away the mcdavid feel good boost i think he is hoping for with this timing

I think there are some bad seasons ahead, even perhaps this year.
I was wrong last year, so could be again, but I think they could be bottom 5 this year.

I really hope so the sooner we start the sooner we might get that center we need.

Unlikely to happen this year. There are no top end centers. Maybe 1 at most.
Maybe someone else emerges, but it's weak for centers.

The piece you get this year is the top line winger.

Thanks Jiri for that info, pity, but a top end winger would be a start.

If the Flames are as bad this season as the experts think, a top 5 pick plus the Knights pick could certainly bolster excitement for the team opening up the new arena. A top 5 pick could land them an impact winger or defenseman or maybe the Flames finally receive some draft luck and get McKenna which would turn the tables in the province with McDavid on his way out.

Get back in topic

McDavid takes a discount but Walman gets every penny and then some...McDavid is a moron, only player on that team to take a cent less.

Some insurance agents are making bank to protect Mavi future earnings from injury!

Some might wonder if it’s 50/50.
