McDavid clearly is doing everything he can to help the Oilers win, as much as I hate them. It must be such a kick in the nuts though, taking a team friendly discount leaving literally millions on the table and then watch your GM make questionable signings and give that money you gave up away for magic beans.

Walman 7x7??? wtf

They were unable to get him a goalie through 10 seasons, but maybe it'll happen this time or the season after! He's gone in his last year via trade when he quietly tells management to move him to a contender for 1 run with them before he signs in the offseason wherever he pleases.

First was much more a fluke than the second.

In both cases opponents rolled over and/or stopped playing. Any variation to the seeding in the first year and they probably dont make it. But this last run teams just were not competitive, for some unfathomable reason.

He shouldn't feel guilty in any case, its the oilers. They're super entitled and super scummy, and hes already given them a decade of his services. But I guess, sure.

We know what the powerplay twins bring to the table and Kane (as much as I loathe him) brought some grit and could score. I guess Frederic is to fill Kane's shoes, though I think he is a downgrade. Oilers success will depend on some the new pieces, like the arrogant little turd Howard. Already has 'iceman' printed on his stick- what a d***e.
Worst case scenario would be Skinner having a bounce-back year, Oilers having a half-decent goalie would be bad news for flames fans.

What if they fail miserably in the 25/26 season?

After I got over the shock of McDavid actually signing and I looked at the contract details my thoughts went to how easy it is to trade the top offensive performer in the game with term at only $12.5M AAV. In my opinion he is being nice to the team and giving them a better opportunity to trade him (to wherever he wants). Can he drag them back to the Final for a 3rd consecutive year?

My mind wandered as I typed this. Can you imagine that they missed the playoffs because they couldn't address goaltending or defense and McDavid demands a trade to Toronto and his next contract is a "Crosby special" of $9.7M AAV?

Skinner is a UFA, him doing decent would be fine as long as they dont win the cup.

The issue in the case of Brady taking less money is that eventually there was so much poorly spent money the cast around him was terrible, and he had to leave in order to win.

You can respect McDavid or mock him for staying committed to trying to win a Cup with the team that Drafted him, and being the guy who clearly took fewer dollars to try and help the team. Does seem pretty clear that it's the final 3 years of his time in Edmonton and that it will ratchet up the urgency to get it done now. When it's all said and done he probably gives them 10 years after his ELC which is more than fair.

Brady was also married to Gisele at the time who was richer than him anyways!

Probably 2 and a half, if that.

That last year is the trade year since they know he isnt extending again.

And the Brady situation sounds eerily familiar. That looks to be exactly what's happening here too. Don't see how they improve. More likely depreciation and downgrades ftom here on out. Maybe they could sign a better goalie in that time. But even thats iffy with their talent evaluation (quite the revolving door of average guys run out of town or bought out).

I can just see Pissguy having a heart to heart over some weed at Connor's death palace.

The problem is, they don’t have any assets to acquire the pieces they need. Specifically goaltenders, who would maybe even be available?

Saros - Maybe if the Preds melt down and decide to go full rebuild. Oilers don’t have the pieces to make that deal happen.

Binnington - if the Blues falter this year and he is having a below average year, I could see McGM pushing hard to acquire his World Cup team mate. Don’t think Skinner and a 1st going the other way is enough. Also St. Louis would have to retain this year to make the trade prior to the deadline, making the cost all that much more.

Markstrom - Could see them bringing in Markstrom after this year as a UFA. Not sure he is the answer though for them. Maybe Oilers move Skinner and a pick for a retained Markstrom at the deadline if he has an average season.

Goalies are a hot commodity these days. No one is going to give up a solid starter without getting a haul and the Oilers don’t have the chips for that.

I don’t care what McSavior signed for, that old team has played a ton of hockey and they aren’t getting better from here. They will just bring in another high priced UFA forward in the offseason and use the space gift Mavi gave them. They will never change.

And the Patriots didn't overpay the next guy they brought in to help win. The guys coming in took discounts also, unlike Walman.
