They're already projecting at 5mm cap next year with no starting goalie. This just keeps the current gang together for the next 2 years.

So he will be 31 as a UFA going on 32 for that next contract. Will be interesting to see where things stand in 3 years, but it looks like he will try for that 6 year payday then. At the end of the day he will have left a lot of money on the table going this route.

I'd want 20M per year if Frederic and Mangiapane were my wingers.

This team basically needs one or both of Savoie/Howard to hit or they are cooked.

Which is good because the Leafs will get him past his peak so if everything goes right he may have zero cups to show for his career.

Edmonton has essentially one year to fix things, this year is already locked. And next year Walman's and Podkolzin's contracts kicks in, eating 5.5M more on their own. And other players are up like Ekholm and Kulak who are already on sweetheart deals.

I don't know. I just see how Bowman can make them better in this time frame. He still doesn't have a lot of cap flexibility a year from now.

If he were a Flame, this kind of signing would make him my all time fave player though.

You accept he won't be there forever. But he just extended the window. EDM better not blow this as they will probably never again have this combination of good fortune (getting best player, then he signed under market value two successive contracts).

Well Connors camp best hope that his production doesn't drop over the next two years. Because he's left some major money on the table.

The NHLPA is going to hate this contract.

It tells me that no matter what this is Conna's last contract with the Oilers.

I don't think so - McDavid just took less money so his team can theoretically build a winner around him, like Crosby did throughout his career with his constant $8.7M cap hit. Now, the pressure is on the Oilers' management to fill the holes in the roster - there's no excuse anymore.

I have no doubt that McDavid made things perfectly clear when signing the contract - if the team can't build a winner in the next three years, there won't be a number big enough to make him stay in 2028.

After this year will have about $22MM for 12 roster spots which includes needing a starting goalie and top 4 dman. This is a rinse and repeat situation, with core of the team aging and falling off.
