Knife Laws in Calgary?
I live in South Texas and always carry a knife with me and don't really think twice about it here. I was planning on traveling to Calgary to see the home opener in October and was wondering before I go and blindly carry around a knife if there are any knife laws that I sould know about?
Thanks in advance.

I am not sure about the laws…I would assume that you are not allowed to carry it, I mean if the cops decide to pad you down and found a knife (again this is pure speculation) you would probably have it confiscated and be arrested…anyway the moral of the story is that you don’t need a knife in Calgary so just leave it at the hotel…this isn’t Edmonton

As long as you also have a Turban you should be good.
How big is the knife?

I carry a knife with me as well most times. There was a big deal about this a while back:
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/sto...ing-bylaw.html
I have a 3.5” folder that I carry with me, but I won’t take it to flames games, into bars or pubs because it’s just too much of a hassle here.
If the cops were to stop you and saw a knife, the best answer to “why do you have that knife?” is “it’s a tool for opening boxes etc.” If you were to say, it’s for self defense, they’d probably confiscate it and give you a fine. Defense laws in Canada are somewhat of a joke.
You can't carry a concealed knife. Mine clips onto my pocket, so I am assuming it isn't concealed, although the laws aren't really clear.

I am fairly sure you can carry around a knife, but there is a restriction on the length of it. But I couldn't tell you what that is, sorry. My shot in the dark guess would be maximum 3 inches.
EDIT: In worths article it says "sheathed knife" so I assume that doesn't apply to jack knifes.

I think you can carry a certain size/classification of knife around but I don't know where to look it up. If you walk around the streets with a 12 inch blade on your waist, you're likely gonna get some attention from police. I have an uncle who carries a 4-6inch utility knife around most of the time and he's never had trouble with it.
Heading into the Saddledome on the other hand, you may want to leave the knife at home. Chances are security won't let you past the front door. If you like the knife, you should probably leave it at home rather then risk it getting confiscated.

Or perhaps:
"I must save the cheerleader!" And then close your eyes and squish your face really hard.

Perhaps I'm naive in thinking that despite the growth in Calgary's population this is still a safe city, or maybe because I'm a big guy and can defend myself quite well but, why would anyone want to carry a knife around in the city. I can understand if you lived in the country, close to the mountains, or just simply had a job where you had to open boxes all day. I'm sorry, but I don't even understand why anyone would carry a knife, concealed or otherwise, to a hockey game.

I dont' know about any localized laws, but I know that you always run faster when carrying a knife.

Well I will most likely not bring one just because it would be one more thing I could get in trouble for. I would also never knowingly take a knife to a hockey game, but there have been times in Dallas I have unknowingly taken one. I really only carry a knife with me because I use one at work all the time for opening boxes, stripping cable, cutting rope, and stuff like that. I really don't carry a knife for self defense.

So if you knowingly won't carry one, why ask this question? As well you say you only carry one at work, which I doubt you'll be doing in Calgary before the game?
Are you sure this isn't for self-defense?

As long as it is not a prohibited weapon, you're good to go. The only prohibited knives are switch blades, butterfly knives, and anything with a spring. Check it with the Customs Agent when you get here, if they let you keep it, then it is legal to carry.
Just remember IT IS NOT FOR PROTECTION! Carrying it for that purpose would make it a weapon instead of a tool for cutting open boxes . This way there is noway to be charged for "weapons dangerous to public peace" or "carry concealed weapon".
Don't bring it to the game though. Goofy security guards will over react and toss you out if they see it.

Just so some of you understand that the Saddledome is a private facility. Just like a bar is a private business. Just because the law says you can carry around a knife in public doesn't mean you are allowed to carry a knife into the Saddledome. It's not the security guards overreacting, it's that the Saddledome has rules that prohibit people from carrying in weapons such as a knife.
