They played much better this game than they have for much of this preseason. They were competitive all over the ice and had some good looks. Still a little too sloppy with the puck management for my liking but a good step in the right direction.
Just Keep Building.

Gridin has to make the team. His play in my opinion has overcome all the administrative red tape that decision would usually keep a player down. Flames need goals, he can score them. You keep kids like that because you were the 3rd worst scoring team in the league last year.

After having Zary, Coronato and Wolf break into the league last year, the Flames are poised to add two 19 year olds to the NHL roster at the start of this season.
Youth movement is in full swing.

Weegar and Andersson both tend to be riskier players when it comes pinches and plays at the point. Bahl and Pachal don’t have much offence to their game. Bean and Miromanov are a mess defensively.
The Phaneuf comparison is great - Aucoin and Hamrlik both had some decent offence to their game but played a little more conservative.
You can see similar pairing dynamics with guys like Makar and Toews. Or Hughes and Hronek.
Soloviov might have been a good fit if he had been playing as a regular NHLer last year. The right defenceman might be out there through trade (Bischel maybe?)
|
What I'm saying is he doesn't need a pure stay at home defensive defenceman. I think he'd do well with Weegar, who is a fair bit more conservative than when he first got here.

I’d say about 90% of the criticism or praise here, where there’s disagreement, gets debated in a totally calm, non-confrontational way, with at worst a few jokes at each others expense. There is a small minority that can’t handle any confrontation, so they blow things way out of proportion.
I hardly think an average person would look at Jiri’s take and read it as dramatically as the previous poster did, or think it’s “insane.” You guys need to relax.

I actually think you're the one who should take a break considering how many posts are you trying to fight another poster on the site. Not to mention are you not the poster who private messaged me accusing me of having multiple accounts? Which was clearly wrong as I am still here.
You're another one of those posters who needs to relax sometimes. People are allowed to have different opinions on the team without being talked down to.

I don't understand Weegar on pp1 over Parekh. It doesn't make any sense, Weegar is awful on the pp.

I thought Weegar was the best thing on the first unit last night.

I still fully expect Kadri, Huberdeau, Coleman and Backlund to be in the top 5 forwards in TOI/GP, and average around 19mins/GP between the 4 of them.

Unless they plan to put Zayne with a defensive guy who will cover for his offensive upside there’s no real point utilizing him. Bean looks lost out there at the best of times, it wasn’t helping the situation at all.
If they have to keep Bahl with Andersson I’d love to see Weegar with Zayne for at least a game…

They’re protecting Zayne, and giving the established vet the opportunity to run with the job first.
Imagine Parekh is handed the reigns to PP1 and it doesn’t look great.
They know who’s job it’s gonna be before long, don’t worry.

It's the preseason. Anyone already guaranteed a roster spot (aside from Wolf, who's always ultra-competitive) has another gear.

Yep. It's literally game -1 of 82 and he's a 19 year old damn.

Differences of opinion are what make this site great, rather than the echo chamber that is HF Oilers. I appreciate all opinions that are well laid out and respectful to other posters.

I'm just glad we never have to sit through a 3 week training camp with 8 preseason games again.

Yeah, it's fine to be indifferent when they lose because you feel a high draft pick is what the team needs. But ecstatic? Come on. Especially when nothing is guaranteed because of the lottery and what the team did last year.
What we should be doing is worrying about young players like Parekh and Griden that actually are Flames and hope they turn into studs.

Why does Huska like Bean as much as he does?
It's takes like that from the coach that have me questioning his perception of things.
Now, it could be strategic. Sometimes coaches will be extra positive about a player at times to try the positive reinforcement angle (Sutter was notorious for letting guys off the hook when they had a rotten game and every one was looking to pile on). But if he genuinely thinks Bean has stood out in a positive way this camp then he's out to lunch.

No the team might just be that bad in spite of wolf. Huby has a nagging injury, Kadri starts to show his age, the kids have a bit of slump, Rasmus is traded, Parkeh is on the team even though he isn't quite ready, the backup goalie isn't good. It's the recipe for something...

It's a rite of passage here to be lectured by Jiri about how you're supposed to talk about the team, players and media members.
Thankfully we're nowhere near Oilers level of dogmatic love and compliance. Just a few old guys yelling at the weather for weathering.
The nice thing is you can simply disregard and carry on.
