A washed up Medvedev defeats Zverev in straight sets. Not really a fan of either guy to be honest, but a Zverev elimination day always brightens up a Monday.

Charlie wins Tokyo defeating Fritz in straight sets and then decides to pull out of Shanghai to rest. Tonight, Jannik Sinner plays Learner Tien in the Beijing final.

On the one hand, I do have some sympathy for Medvedev cramping during his match and it was harsh of the umpire to give him a code violation for not trying. All that sympathy goes out the window with the total disrespect he shows umpires though. He did end up retiring in his match versus Tien, but I expect some more fines being assessed to Medvedev,

So there was a 3rd set bagel delivered in the Iga Swiatek - Emma Navarro match only it was Emma that sent the bagel to Iga.

I understand the era he played in, but how is one grand slam hall worthy?

It certainly is right on the cusp for Hall of Fame consideration to me. I did a little digging because my memory is not as good as it used to be, but DelPo won 1 grand slam and 1 Masters 1000 tourney (Indian Wells). He did win 22 ATP titles over his career (maybe 20 is a magic number like 500 goals in the NHL), but most of those were ATP 250 and 500 tournaments.

Just for comparison sake, Michael Chang also won 1 grand slam (the French Open as a 17 year old), but won a total of 34 titles (that's a big number) which includes 7 Masters 1000 titles. Chang was inducted in 2008 to the ITF Hall of Fame.

If we want to compare DelPo to a contemporary of his, Marin Cilic has one grand slam (the 2014 US Open), one Masters 1000 title, and a total of 21 ATP titles. If DelPo gets in, then it makes sense for Cilic to also get in. To me, it starts turning the Hall of Fame into the Hall of Very Good.

Marat Safin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016, he won two grand slams, 15 overall titles, and also reached world #1 (something that alluded both Delpo and Chang). That said, if you win multiple grand slams, that should automatically punch your ticket to the Hall. Thus, Stan Wawrinka is a Hall of Famer with 3 grand slams and 16 overall titles.

Delpo's certainly no Kevin Lowe when it comes to HOF merit.

That still really bugs me to this day, I mean, if Kevin Lowe plays for any other team during the 80's, he doesn't even get a sniff at the Hall of Fame. Being part of an excellent team that won multiple Cups is more being in the right place at the right time. Put it this way, I still think the Oilers win all those Cups if Kevin Lowe is not part of the team. Paul Coffey, completely different story.

Thanks EE, now I feel like I need to take a shower. Back to tennis talk now lol

That's what happens when you turn a HOF into a HOG.

Gabriel with a nice win 6-4 6-4 over Benjamin Bonzi at the Shanghai Masters last evening. Shapo and Felix are in action tonight.

Which of the players dash mentioned would you have in? I agree Wawrinka with three slams should get in.

If Wawrinka and Andy Murray are the two best players of their generation, they win 10 slams each? More?

Neither Delpo or Cilic for me. Stan for sure as his peak was HOF worthy.

Agreed. Even having Martin on a social media graphic right next to the great man feels off.

With Goatfin taking out Ben Shelton and Casper Ruud forced to retire due to injury against Zizou Bergs, things have opened up for Gabriel who takes on Goatfin next.

Stan was certainly a late bloomer and his switch to the Yonex VCore 95D (my favorite stick and I have two of them) coincided with him challenging the Big Three along with Andy.

To Stan's credit, he acknowledges that Andy Murray is head and shoulders above him:

“For me, he was part of this Big Four era,” Wawrinka told Express Sport about Murray.

“From 18 years old until 30 he was always fighting with the Big Three, he was always there.

“Let’s put it that way, he won ‘only’ three because all the other [players] were taking but he was always in the final, he was always winning a lot.

For me, his career is nothing compared to mine. He’s way ahead, he won many more titles, things than me, and his level was close to the Big Three for 10 years.”
