Well that seems unlikely considering a population growth.

You know who gets paid way too ####ing much? Every single Oil and Gas worker. And they piss it all away and ask for government handouts in the end anyway.
Smh.
We should be demanding more from them to pay the teachers.

When there's a massive shortfall in teachers because many are retiring/quitting and few wants to start a career in the industry Gully purposes an effective wage cut (inflation).
Their credibility is being attacked by the UCP- ignored for curriculum, accused of teaching woke ideology, and the book ban/trans attacks.
Increased work after all the EA cuts, increased volume and complexity of students. What's not to love?
I'm certain a negotiated settlement would be done if the teachers got an additional 0.5%-1% per year in the agreement and some language around caps on class sizes. However, this Government wants a war and cruelty is their objective.
Gully, if this is such an easy, well paying job why don't you apply?

ITS NOT ABOUT THEIR SALARIES.
Salaries that are fair and reasonable are table stakes to even begin a conversation.
This is about classroom conditions, supports for students, and creating a sustainable public education system that lifts all Albertans, not a system that prioritizes the outcomes for the wealthy.
Education is the greatest investment we can make in our provinces future wealth. This whole situation is about getting our public education system back to a place where that is a possible path. Right now the system is on life support.

No it really comes down to salaries and wanting more

I tell all my children to be teachers because it's so easy and get so much time off. I'm also friends with literally thousands of teachers from multiple schools all across Calgary and the entire province. Just incase you're thinking of questioning my opinions.

Alberta Politics & Government Thread 3.0
The government is advertising their position on schools and teacher hiring like crazy. Must have seen it at least 6 times in half a ball game. I understand from the discussion here that 3000 teachers is not enough considering the number of existing and planned schools. I’m not aware that ATA has posted a public counter-proposal, so what’s the thinking for what an acceptable number is?
Edit: the fact that I can quote the exact UCP numbers while the ATA position is not well known seems like a problem for the PR war. The average person has no idea whether 3000 teachers is adequate or not.
Also is it true that none of the $8B for new schools has been spent or even budgeted yet?

You're shocked that a Conservative government has done absolutely nothing to improve a bad situation while "attempting" to fix it for decades?

What's 1 more student?
Even the UCP can handle questions from a single student.
Teachers just need to pull up the boot straps!

While I think Teachers are over-all well compensated, I can understand their miscontent. The cost of everything is going up and their wages are frozen ergo their purchasing power is diminishing.
Makes sense.
I run a small business and my clients dont like it when my prices go up either, but when all of the costs increase from things like rent to food, something has to happen.
The class-size issue and dealing with troublesome students is a whole other story though. It seems they're being left without help and that is a much more difficult proposition to fix.
And I dont feel like that is the Teachers' fault, it appears more likely to me that they're being let down by an over-abundance of administration. When it all trickles down to the Teacher its like "Well, we're all outta cash...you figure it out!" Which is wholly unfair and inefficient.

I’m married to a teacher.
I can unequivocally confirm it is absolutely not about “salaries and wanting more” and that it is absolutely about classroom sizes, supports, and overall sustainability of the system.
Asked her just now, in fact.
Again, to be very clear, fair pay is literally the starting point of this discussion. It’s table stakes to even begin negotiating towards a solution.
I don’t understand why we are actively trying to dumb down future generations of Albertans by knee capping the education system in our province. Why do we have any interest in mimicking the US system? It’s objectively worse on all metrics.
