In city - any city course. Heather Glen is cheaper. Or Wingfield. Try Bewsters in K country also.

Most courses will book you for nine holes though, if you choose.

City courses are the best value, they can be hard to book, but the easy 9-hole courses are usually not a problem to get a spot when they open up for booking.

McCall Lake 9-hole Par 3 is the easiest of the bunch. You could even do it with just 3 clubs (iron, wedge, putter).

Lakeview is a little longer with some Par 4s. If you want to be able to us a driver (assuming your a beginning hitting your drive under 220 yards) than it's a better option. No sand and or water hazards, so it's a pretty easy course.

You can rent carts, but 90% of people just walk or push carts on those short courses.

where would you golf in Scotland? We are going for spring break next year and we did enter the lottery for St Andrews, but we really don't expect to get it. What other course would you guys recommend?

Agree...the grips might be hard for your friend though because of the original size, and how many wraps he adds.

I've had more success ordering a larger grip and adding less wraps. Something to assess.

Around st Andrews we played the castle course, new and old course, and Panmure (was a bit a of a fav but a drive). Kingsbairns is great if in the budget.

Are you only staying around St Andrews?

You can daily draw for the old course as well.

We actually haven't booked where we are staying yet. We just got the flights in and out of London but we want to drive to Scotland for a few days.

Only other area I have been is Inverness and played royal Dornoch, Cabot highlands, and Nairn Championship. All three I would definitely recommend.

You can get your fill as much as you can afford around St. Andrews and Inverness. Don't have anything to add to what Weitz mentioned. Your budget and time is all that will limit you really. Plus are you going to golf, or are you hoping to fit some golf in while you visit Scotland?

And if you're going to golf, are you a golf nerd? More specifically are you a golf snob who looks for way to one-up the less sophisticated, mainstream travel golf crowd? But more importantly, are you looking for a bargain?

If so, you'll want to try the Machrihanish (OG Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes), Dunaverty, Shiskine, Corrie route. The Machrihanish courses are world class and half to a third of the price of the top courses around Inverness and St. Andrews.

It's cheaper and a pretty unique travel spot, but more isolated and would take longer to get to than going to Inverness from St. Andrews. But a neat drive that would even include a ferry if that appeals to you.

Just returned from my trip to Minnesota to visit my brother and his wife. Managed to get in 6 rounds during the week. Courses were in amazing shape. They got a lot of rain like us and everything is green. Should have stayed for another week.

TBQH he doesn't use any extra wraps on his clubs. I found them hard also and I don't add any extra wraps to my clubs either. Maybe it's a feel thing.

Northwood Hills golf
Go play Deacon's Lodge.

Thank me later.

Got in a mid afternoon round with a couple of my club members. Nobody was holding us up and we finished in just under 3 1/2 hours. It was also my 70th round of the season.

I had a visit with my doctor this morning to go over some tests I had done. He also knows i'm an avid golfer and quizzed me on the number of rounds I'd played. The question went further when he suggested it would interesting to know just how many kilometers I walked on the course, given that I don't ride a power cart.

So I took the yardage of my course (6195) and converted it into kilometers. Turns out it was 5.6 per round which doesn't include the walking between holes and the distance to and from the vehicle to the proshop. Before I did the calculations I deducted from my total the 6 rounds I played in Minnesota where I used a power cart. That course was not walkable. The final number was 347 kilometers which surprised me.

I'm 67 years old and want to stave off the health effects of growing old as long as possible.

That 5.6km sounds awfully low. I wear my Apple watch and walk almost every round, and the distance seems to be more like 11km. I realise that you're just estimating, but I'd say that you're close to 650km than you might think!

Unpopular opinion in North America, I think walking is the best way to play golf, i really don't love golfing in carts (unless it's a crazy mountain course that would take 6 hours to get between holes).

I could probably double the official yardage when calculating how far I walk. Factor in the zig zagging every hole as I alternate from one side of the fairway (rough would be more accurate) to the other every shot!

That said my grand total for this year was two nine hole rounds, both played early in the season. Every year I seem to play less and less. Work has been absolutely time consuming the past few years, it's next to impossible to get out.

You're right, it is an estimate. Now to be fair, my course in Nanton is a very walkable with the distance between holes being extremely short with the exception of the walk between holes 9 and 10. CP poster DoubleK has played my course with me and can attest to that. Now contrast that to Speargrass in Carseland where some of the holes have great walking distances. That's a course I'd have trouble walking on a regular basis, or at least not be able to play 3 rounds in a row.

My Strava running app actually tracks my golf rounds via integration with my Garmin watch and our course is right around 9km per round; sometimes 8.97, or 9.02, 9.03 etc.

A walkable, tight course. Close tee boxes, no extra long walks other than the golf. So likely pretty similar to your course.

Nice brag. I usually get 10.5 kms at that course, but I can slice it from 1 to 16 and hook it from 5 onto 8. It really gets the kilometres up there.

On a serious note I've worn my Garmin watch several times at Marine and I am usually around 9.30 kms from the first tee until I drop the clubs off at the shop. Coincidentally, both nines are about 4.65 kms.

I have tracked one round at Mickelson National at it was 12.83 kms. From the 1st tee to the 10th tee was 6.5 kms and from the 10th tee back to the starting area was 6.33 kms. There is a bit more elevation on the back and some longer walks between holes. I was surprised the front nine was longer.
