It's a lot more nuanced than that.

Teams waive players with potential all the time. Pospisil was waived in 2023. Gustav Forsling was famously waived. There will always be players you want to keep but have to risk losing because there’s no room on the big club.
There are also the Dryden Hunts of the world- quality spare parts you sign knowing they’ll have to clear waivers given their age.

Related note - wasn't Kristian Huselius waived by the Panthers at one point, and then traded to Calgary shortly thereafter for Steve Montador? Dude turned his damn career around here, what a pickup for us.

There's a long list of players who were waived that went on to contribute, because it's not as black and white as "This guy sucks"
Forsling and St Louis were on waivers and unclaimed. Markstrom went on waivers and was unclaimed. Michael Grabner was claimed and scored 30 goals. Martin Gelinas was claimed on waivers and went on to score 30 twice I believe. Chris Kunitz was claimed on waivers twice. Rich Peverly was claimed on waivers. Carter Verhaege cleared waivers. Sam Montembeault was a waiver claim.
Most of the time they go nowhere but some of them do come back.

I am very relieved, personally, that Kuznetsov wasn't claimed. I got to watch 2 preseason games, and both had Kuz looking like one of the better defenders on the ice. He is not flashy at all, and he could mix in more physicality, but IMO he is a perfect middle pairing long term potential player for us to build around. A great future partner for Brzu (though I have to say I was way less impressed with Brzu this season.)
I think the choices they made this summer made good roster construction basically impossible. We are carrying too many tweener players with no potential upside and ultimately blocking our younger tweeners from coming up and showing that they have more upside.
Alas, it doesn't matter. IMO the lineup we are proposing will be bottom 10 in the NHL, which may be the goal and I would support that being the goal.

I was with you until that second paragraph. In no way will tweeners with no upside block tweeners with upside. They are tweeners. You probably can't tell what the upside is with them, and if you can (the Kirkland types), they aren't blocking anyone.
As for bottom 10, I mean maybe? I thought they were a lock for bottom 5 last year and was wrong. I think they are better this year, but have no idea where they will place.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Yep, stellar Grease Pig draft pick Rafeal Lavoie. Bounced back and forth between Edmonton and Vegas a few times.
