Don’t know if McDavid stays in Edmonton or not, but his contract will have a higher AAV than this one.

I think McDavid knows that his career will be judged based on Stanley Cup rings and I do think he was probably considering a team friendly short term deal with the Oilers to prove to everyone that it's all about winning a cup for him. However the optics of signing for less than Kaprizov is terrible for him, his agent, and the NHLPA.

Which is the problem. He has never played a full season due injury issues.
He has played 319 Games out of 410 since coming into the league.
I would have concerns hitching my wagon to a winger that does not play the entire season.

Fair - but there isn’t another player they can hitch the wagon to instead
It’s hard enough to get a superstar , when you do you don’t let them go , as they can go on to win 2 Stanley Cups while you search for the next one

He can have his cake and eat it too - Connor will get traded to a better run organization (probably in the East) and will get his cup. Then he will sign a monster extension.
Oilers will still be a PITA with Drai and whatever grab bag of goodies they get in return for McD. But it does bring them down closer to us and everyone else in the West.

I question how a winger gets $17m and Draisaitl, a center, gets $14m. Yes I know he plays a lot of wing. Even if you consider them both wingers:
Drai is only a year and a half older and has won the Art Ross, Hart, Rocket Richard, and Ted Lindsay and was a major contributor to 2 SCF trips whether we like to admit it or not.
Kaprizov won the Calder, has never advanced out of the first round, hasn't stayed healthy, and isn't getting any younger either.
Do the Oilers advance out of the first round either with only Drai and not McD?
Seems like a massive overpay. Would love to be proven wrong if it means Minny can get Edmonton outta there, but right now I just don't get it. But I guess for the first half it should at least not be a boat anchor. After that though, rising cap or not, I don't see how it's not awful by the end.
Best part is what on earth is McD going to get now. How high can he go with how fast the cap is rising?

If you know an Oilers fan, don’t forget to text them:
“97 just signed an 8-year extension!!”

An overpay for KK to stay in Minny. I think KK's camp put on a pretty good poker face and just landed them an extra 8m total in the contract for doing so.

Probably because those 2 contract were not signed at the same time or even the same year.

I'd argue Draisaitl is underpaid. If he were to sign an extension right now, I think he makes at least $17M if not more. Credit to the Oilers. They got him to take a discount.

Wow, surprised that he ended up signing after all the news/rumours came out after he rejected the initial $16 million per year offer. But he's one of the best forwards in the game and Minny desperately needed to keep him.
And so much for Oilers fans thinking they would get McDavid for a "hometown discount". His next deal is absolutely going to be at least $18 million per and probably more in the $19-20 million range.
Not that he's signing there anyways...

McDavid is under enormous pressure from the NHLPA to set the gold standard.

Minny will likely not get the value they want to out of this contract

Yep, I believe the same. If the rumours are true that he wants to be in Toronto and try to win there, I can see him taking a slight discount with them from the $20.5 million max but it's not going to be that significant.

I'm not sure it does. This is massively overpaying a guy to stay in a market he didn't want to stay in. McDavid actually wants to play in Toronto. I could see McDavid signing the same deal and is clearly the better player.

It's all timing. Draisaitl signed early for no reason and signed before the cap explosion was announced, so he misses out on about $16M-$24M now because of it. Had he signed after the big cap jump was announced he's in the $16-$18M AAV range too.
For McDavid though this means he can't take less than $18M IMO
He's not going to take less than the highest paid in the NHL, and he will have pressure from the union to set the bar. So that will be at least $18M I think.
For the Wild they have no choice. Kaprizov is a top 10 player in the NHL and they couldn't let him walk, he's their teams offense.
He is averaging 99 points per 82 for his career but the issue is he can rarely stay healthy and play a full 82 games.
