Minnesota Wild President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year, $136 million contract extension ($17 million average annual value) that begins in the 2026-27 season and goes through the 2033-34 season.

Big, big number. Does it handcuff Minnesota?

We'll see if it works out better than the last time they wrote massive deals with star player (Parise and Suter).

The market just got re-set. I was expecting it earlier, but it didn't happen until now.
Conroy has done well with his signings and some of our players value will go up in the next year.

I suppose our saving grace is that none of the flames can currently point at Kap as a comprable

I am actually glad he stayed. Not a huge fan of the Wild, but it is nice to see superstars stay with the team that drafted him. I think he would have gotten this much on the open market anyway - or at least close to it.
Also.. this will make a lot of noise in Edmonton now, won't it? LoL

Kaprizov is good, but is he really this good?
I'm not seeing it.

While Suter and Parise were the class of the 2012 free agents, they were not top 5 players in the NHL at the time like Kaprizov is now.

$23,155,001 cap at the start of next year, with 16/23 players under contract and no major RFA's or UFA's. They'll be good. They've lived so long with huge dead cap, this is nothing for them, haha.

Jesus that’s high for a winger. What is Mcdavid going to get if a winger gets that?

I thought the same as I really don't pay much attention to the Wild. Almost exact career ppg as Draisatl. And he's not playing with McDavid. Also has some nice numbers on the defensive side as well.

Oof...Mr. Bill Guerin. Too much, too long. I love Kaprizov, but he's not worth this much.
He was really desperate to keep his franchise star in a place where franchise stars don't want to stick around.

Not really. With him they are on the cusp of being a cup contender. Without him, they are the Flames. For the Wild the contract is worth every penny at least for the first half of the deal. The salary cap is going up quite a bit in the future and in a couple of years this contract will become the norm for franchise players and first to break through usually initially looks bad but ends up aging well.
There's no way McDavid can accept less than this contract so definitely makes things more difficult for the Oilers given the available cap space they have to pay him and improve the roster.

They really didn't have a choice. If you can't re-sign him, you may as well full rebuild.

I can't see many GMs having the balls to let Kaprizov walk.
