I’m not dismissing anyone, just found it interesting that Gridin is getting the bigger opportunity in this game than Honzek.
To me this means Honzek needs to have a big game.

When injuries occur

Honzek-Morton-Suniev
Huberdeau, Kadri, Backlund, Coleman, Sharangovich and Zary are all out.

It isn't just the '4th line' that will get cut, it is very likely all of: Gridin, Kerins, Honzek, Suniev and Morton, save one (unless they keep 8 D, then all will be cut)

To me it means they think the players slot best the way they have them. There are no line numbers in pre-season, just 4 lines to roll.

Not sure what FBI might be saying, but I think it's a good thing that Honzek is getting a long look and a lot of games up and down the lineup. But I also agree that it's telling that he's starting this game on what appears to be the Wrangler's top line (if Morton clears) to start the season.

I'm a huge Honzek fan, but I can see benefit with him starting in the AHL, without writing him off, particularly since he hasn't yet blown the doors off like he did last year. It'll be good to see how he responds (he admitted, being sent down last year was tough for him to take, which effected his production, so maybe the team wants to see if this time it pushes him to excel).

My guess is that unless Honzek has a big game tonight, that he likely gets sent down (not necessarily a bad thing), but I think Kerins will be kept up.

Out of those, Kerins and Morton have a leg up because they require waivers to be sent down, and the organization is still light on centres at the AHL level and up.

My guess is that all 5 of them will be sent down, but there is a chance one of them stays (Morton or Kerins likely). Almost no chance Gridin does, despite the line he is on tonight.

Agree about Gridin, but due to the waivers issue I'm definitely thinking Kerins will stay up. Not sure about Morton. Also to help continue the "earn it and you're in" mentality like they did last year. Keep the youngsters hungry.

Huska has said more than a couple times that Morton has been the best player in games, and now one of 2 or 3 best in camp. It would be crazy to cut him if he does it again tonight

He mentioned he likes to battle down low in the D zone vs watching battles from the wing. I also reeeeeeeally don't like hearing that he worked all summer on faceoffs with Michal Handzus, only to show up at camp and find himself on the wing again.

I sure wish Kadri and Backlund would spend a summer or two working on faceoffs.

Such an over rated concern.

The difference between a top 25 face off guy and Backlund is about 4.5%. Over a season that's 65 more face off wins or less than one a game.

Why not win more of them, but give me a guy that can make reads in the triangle in his own zone over the face off wizard 100 times out of 100.

Sounds so so unhappy.

How do you know Kadri and Backlund don't work on their face offs?

He worked on faceoffs though so the Flames should’ve just guaranteed him the center position.
