A shark with webbed feet!
You thought running up on the beach was good enough to escape a shark attack?
Think again!
Quote:
“It was only when I was about to cut the shark the day after I received it that I found two webbed feet sticking out from the lower part of the body.
|
Edit: Think you could fit a pair of skates on those feet? Maybe photoshop a SJ jersey on it?

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Muka Head marine research station head Prof Dr Zulfigar Yasin seems to be an idiot. It is pretty clear from the photograph that the shark has deformed claspers, not "legs". These are sex organs, used to transmit sperm to the female's cloaca. Usually they taper at the end, these ones seem to be flared. They may resemble legs but they are completely different. Consider that the ancestor to tetrapods was a bony fish, similar to a coelacanth; sharks are cartilaginous fishes, and much more primitive in fin structure (read: unlikely to sprout limbs).
PS I love the reader comments of this most august newspaper. Much more interesting than the story itself:
"My heavens! Do you all really believe this is a sign of end times? It really gives you something to think about, regardless of whether you are black or white. "

"Fish are not animals, they are fish. Animals have fur and uses the mother milk to feed the young. Fish do not do this. Therefore not animals!"
- Uwe · Germany · Jun 24, 2007 @ 2:26pm
"Great! Now you're telling me that God is tinkering with the sea creatures too. I thought He only did that to the dinosaurs. My faith is strong, so I believe what I see in these pictures."

So sharks, or at least that species, have two penises? That has some serious potential!

Well they aren't really penises per se, they are referred to as intromittent organs. But yes, you could look at it as having two penises. Marsupials, which are a lot more closely related to humans, often have penises forked at the end (and marsupial vaginas are bifurcated as well).

I think I get it ... they need two penises because they only work intromittently.
Sorry ... couldn't resist that. You didn't think this two penis bit would stay serious though did you?

No offense to my former fellow countrymen, but majority of Malaysians tend to make up ######ed stories. I mean, for a country that turned their national museum into a "supernatural museum" tells you Malaysians enjoy their supernatural and crytozoological fix.

Unbelievable that this even makes for a semi-serious news story. As ic said, they are very obviously claspers.
Some of the comments are priceless though.
Obvious photoshop. Check out the arm of the lady behind the fish. The color is all wrong and what's that vertical white line where the normal tail would be located?
- Roger · USA · Mar 27, 2007 @ 10:31am
Umm, Roger, that IS the tail! BWAHAHAHAHAHA
Looking through the book of Revelations, Chapter 9 we are clearly headed for a time of great sorrow. These animals are now able to walk by the power of satan. This is my greatest fear as I have seen the raw power of a shark. Now they can come get me. Frightening.
- Randall · Gloucester, Virginia · Apr 16, 2007 @ 6:39am
Oh Randall, I bet you are a real hit at parties!
Randall is clearly dead-on in his assessment of the situation. "Scientists" will probably try to write this off as "evolution", but most reasonable people know that you and I didn't come from no monkey! All things in this world come from God or Satan and a creature as foul and evil as this one clearly came from the depths of hell! Consider this a sign of things to come, so you better set your business right with the Lord TODAY!
- Clyde · Holy Trinity, AL · Apr 16, 2007 @ 11:03am
Holy Debbie Downer.
Are sharks related to animals? I thought only animals had legs.
- Kerry · Trenton, NJ · Jun 13, 2007 @ 11:28am
"Hi Kerry? Yes, its Mr. Bannerman, your 4th grade Science teacher. Yes, hello, I am doing well...Thank you. I'm calling today because it seems you are actually a complete moron. Yes, yes Im sure this does come as quite a shock...well, we aren't completely sure how you managed to get out of Elementary School but we are requesting your return...Yes..well, I guess your boss will have to find someone else to clean the fryer. Ok then...see you soon."

AHAHAHA ok, ok, one more. I just cant get enough of these.
Sharks are not animals? I thought there are 4 animal kingdoms: mammals, fish, reptiles, and maybe turtles? anyway i was taught that fish are one of the animal kingdoms. yeah fish have to be animals, they're not plants!
- Don · Hawaii · Jun 25, 2007 @ 1:23pm

some of my fav's
you a bunch of suckas. this aint no fish. its a squid or something.
- pam · new york · Jul 9, 2007 @ 9:16pm
( this one is beyond comment)
Why did the web-feet shark cross the road? To test the faith of nonbelievers on the other side.
- Patricia · Galway, Ireland · Jun 25, 2007 @ 2:50pm
(what does a shark with feet have to do with God?)
A nice little 2-part
I think this is not serious.
- Hans · Germany · Jun 14, 2007 @ 12:55pm
Hans, what the hell do you know about sharks? They don't have sharks in Germany! Looks real to me!
- Steele · Galveston, Texas · Jun 15, 2007 @ 9:32pm
(and your from texas...they have sharks in texas? maybe at the k-mart where you go to get your weapons and jack daniels?)
Another one:
Are you all friggin' crazy??? Sharks don't have legs, morons! This is a joke. - Lance Jennings · El Paso, Tx · May 25, 2007 @ 12:49pm
Lance, I think you lack faith. God is REAL and he occasionally put things in front of us to test our faith. They may not make any sense logically, but that is why this is a test of "faith" not logic. Stop believing with your eyes and start believing with your heart.
- Chelsea · Boise, ID · May 28, 2007 @ 4:39pm
(so lets say i find a...dragon? no, a crumple-horned snorkack ((good ol' harry potter))...if i have a picture does that make it real?)
and i'm spent

Plenty of sharks off the coast of Texas, on which Galveston is located. Woops.
