I'm perfectly fine with Honzek as a middle six. Good enough. But where does the top line come from?

To get the superstar #1C Flames need one of these to happen:

1. Disaster season, draft top three.
2. Get lucky with a draft pick, just like they did with their star goalie and soon to be star defender.
3. Use the immense quantity of middle tier NHL caliber players to somehow get a quality player back.

None of those things seem impossible or even unlikely. They are also not mutually exclusive.

They only need the one piece for the window to open. They have lots of good vets and a great pipeline of players that will challenge for spots on the roster, with no reason to think the pipe of middle tier platers will dry up considering most of their talent came from later picks (assuming we don’t suffer any scouting department setbacks).

You were one of the fans who prematurely gave up on Backlund weren't you?

Need more time to know what Honzek is. At this point he has mostly gone backward from a somewhat high draft position. His numbers in junior and the AHL has been very underwhelmed
That was unnecessarily pissy.

You make it sound like every young player gets NHL games.

Honzek had a great camp and forced his way into a roster ... actually played well but had no point ... got hurt.

I'm far from a "Honzek is a given" camp, but you can't take away how well he played last fall. He earned NHL games. So yeah NHL games played is certainly a variable in how young players are doing, albeit an inconsistent one across 32 teams.

I think the guy has a high floor which will make him an NHLer. I'm starting to wonder on his ceiling though.

Well you left out the most unlikely - grabbing a UFA superstar centre.
