That's the other point, ducks had plenty of room so the offer sheet would just be accepted. Offer sheets are not this powerful tool, they only work In select situations. Edmonton having two players that were good but not high cap hits while having no cap room was a Hailey's comet. Everybody says GMs should just offer sheet don't really think through all the stars that have to align

Wouldn't signing a contract make McTavish more tradeable? Before he had a contract he had leverage to refuse to sign with a team he didn't like for a fair amount. Now, he can be traded anywhere for the best return. Hopefully the Flames keep tabs on his availability and can strike if he becomes available.

The thing that makes him the most tradeable is having McQueen in the system. Between McQueen (and to a lesser degree Nilson) there is very likely a #1/2C in the pipeline which means they have a bit of a logjam and someone is going to become expendable.

Having said that, I hope they go slow with McQueen. It would be a real shame for him to get rushed and have his career wrecked by more injuries.

Uh. Leo Carlsson also exists.

Exactly.

Right now they have Carlsson, McTavish, Granlund (3 years left), Strome (2 years left), Poehling (1 year left). It is already a logjam that will cause some drama if everyone wants to play C in the first 3 lines. I assume that Carlsson is locked in as their top line C and McTavish should be #2.

McQueen and Nilson being added to the pipe definitely creates a problem as McQueen likely becomes a #1/2C and Nilson is hopefully a 2/3C. It might take them 1-3 years to come online but at that point you still have Carlsson and McTavish and McQueen all wanting #1/2C roles.

At that point, McTavish could be one heck of a trade chip.

Safe to assume that both sides caved in and met in the middle. Handling of the whole thing is embarrassing by the Ducks really. McTavish is going to be playing catch up having missed almost all of camp and this likely could have been solved a month ago if not for ego.

He would have been a fantastic fit in Calgary - obviously the player was not interested in going elsewhere though.
