Feels like it, Group A is pretty close to an opening night roster.

I can see Gridin and Suniev anchoring the Wranglers, as they are both AHL eligible without waivers. Stromgen, Solovyov and Bruz are the other NHL potentials that are right on the edge of group B.

I think that Stromgen and Sol require waivers?

I'm pretty sure Stromgren is still exempt for one more year, no? This was the first year for Kuznetsov and Kerins (2002 born. Stromgren is 2003).

Seems like Kuznetzov has put himself in position to at least win a job.

I remember Friedman on the 32 thoughts podcasts last year say the Flames thought Poirier was close to making the jump. Looks like that changed.

Wonder if any other NHL team thinks they can salvage him.

According to PuckPedia, this is the list of players who are waiver exempt:
  • Basha, Andrew
  • Bell, Parker
  • Brzustewicz, Hunter
  • Cicek, Nick
  • Ciona, Lucas
  • Gridin, Matvei
  • Grushnikov, Artyom
  • Honzek, Samuel
  • King, Carter
  • Morin, Etienne
  • Parekh, Zayne *
  • Say, Owen
  • Sergeyev, Arseni
  • Strömgren, William
  • Suniev, Aydar

* Parekh must be returned to the OHL if he doesn't stick in the NHL.

Basha turns 20 before the end of the year and Gridin was not drafted from the CHL, so they both can play in the AHL this season, but they could also be sent back to junior if the Flames decide that's best for their development.

Me too. He looked incredible just before that injury, but it seems that really derailed him.

I didn't know Pachal could play left side. That'would be a huge improvement for a partner instead of Bean. Pachal is rock solid defensively.

Injury really hurt Poirier, he was on a great track going into last year.

Also starting to worry about Huberdeau, he's missed a ton of time already for "maintenance" which is not going to be good for him getting up to game shape/speed.

They have to at least give Kuznetsov some NHL games. Otherwise I don't get the logic of drafting big stay at home D in the 2nd round. He's not going to wow you with his offense, but he has taken a step each year. The next step is playing at the NHL level.

As for Kerins, I can't help but cheer for the kid. IMO he is a home run of a 6th round pick. I see a lot of Monahan in his game. Starting with the lethal shot placement, and quick release from up close, the under-rated passing, and getting lost in coverage. Similarly Monahan's biggest weaknesses are foot speed, and defensive game, and he has taken good strides in addressing both. So if it were up to me he would be in the rotation ahead of Farabee, Pospisil, Klapka, and Lomberg.

some AHL training camps open on Monday. Assuming the Wranglers are similar, expect cuts as early as today, and many this weekend

Last year, Wranglers training camp opened on Monday Sept 30th

They will want to cut it down so that they can start practicing with a smaller group and get the main core into some pre season action. No point keeping a bunch around. A few waiver eligible might stick around though to try and put them on waivers when hundreds go on the waiver wire at the same time.

Assuming Wranglers camp starts on Monday, we'll probably see the Wrangler players who require waivers being waived tomorrow, and the rest of the guys being sent down on Sunday.

There's no point in cutting them earlier to just have them sitting around doing nothing for a few days.
