Is it just me or are the Kirkland Nike Dunks stupid?
Those Costco lover people are all excited about it and I'm thinking to myself, "Wearing Kirkland is more like a badge of anti-fashion..."

My daughter is better than me.
She's graduated from grassroots sports to competitive now and she had her evaluations this weekend for the first time. When I was a kid, I got so nervous at any type of tryout/eval and I would clam up and suck. I put so much pressure on myself and couldn't get out of my own head. Ultimately why I failed.
I explained to her what evaluations are and how they work, and she might not be placed on the first team. She was just purely excited to get back on the field and none of that bothered her. She said yeah, of course she wants to make the first team and she's going to do her best, but she'll be happy anywhere she plays
Not sure how I got so lucky with her character traits.

The aspartame/red dye 40/artificial flavours debate is so funny to me. Are they good for you, no. Are they as bad as a fast food burger, frozen pizza, bacon or not exercising? Also no. But no one talks about how being 30lbs overweight and sedentary will lead to worse outcomes than any of those things. Easier to blame corporations maybe?
I'm not targeting anyone, I just find it silly that you see these arguments all over the internet. Also Dr Pepper Zero is incredible.

This just sounds like copium because you don't want to acknowledge scientific studies showing things like increased diabetes risks. Go ahead and enjoy your DPZ, but it's pretty weird to be ####ting on others' views when they are actually based on science and not beverage enjoyment. Avoiding some artificial sweeteners could actually help lose those excess 30 pounds, too.

Previous findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies
Contrary to our findings and those of other observational studies, RCTs of ArtSw have demonstrated modest but inconsistent weight loss effects, which are likely due to controlled or reduced caloric intake among the individuals participating in these trials. A 2014 meta-analysis of 15 weight management RCTs in children and adults over a median 12-week time course showed that replacing sugar or sugar-sweetened beverages with ArtSw or ArtSw-containing beverages resulted in modest but statistically significant weight loss (−0.80 kg), reductions in mean BMI (−0.24 kg/m2), or lower fat mass (−1.10 kg) [9]. Likewise, a meta-analysis of 29 intervention studies showed that replacing sugar intake with ArtSw resulted in an approximate 1 kg reduction in body weight over a median study period of 12 weeks [10]. And yet, when ArtSw intake was compared with controls of water or no dietary change over a median 12-week study period, a 161 daily increase in caloric intake per SD of ArtSw intake was observed—though no accompanying change in weight status was apparent over the relatively brief study periods [10]. In evaluating the above evidence, it is important to consider the study designs, sample populations, and trial periods. Because many of these trials were testing ArtSw as a replacement for sugars and or were conducted in tandem with weight loss programs, they likely do not capture real-world ArtSw consumption in free-living adults over a period of decades.

Replacing water with diet pop drinks = be fatter.
Replace regular pop with diet drinks = lose weight.
This is what I'm talking about. Everyone talks about the risks of Aspartame but it's an alternative sweetener. It's disingenuous to argue diet drinks vs water because they're not the same thing. It's arguing that bicycling to work is bad for the environment because the carbon footprint to make a bicycle is higher than you just walking, and ignoring that the real alternative is driving a car.

Supporting this hypothesis, observational studies have shown that ArtSw or diet beverage intake may promote adiposity, higher BMI, and greater waist circumference. In a prospective study of 749 male and female older adults, diet beverage consumers showed greater waist circumferences and increases in waist circumference compared with those who did not drink diet beverages over a mean 9.4-year follow-up [7]—consistent with our findings. A 2014 meta-analysis of nine prospective cohort studies with 1 to 7.5-year follow-ups reported that ArtSw intake, assessed by diet beverage consumption, was related to a modest signal for greater BMI (0.03 kg/m2) [9]. A subsequent meta-analysis likewise reported a modest but significant correlation between ArtSw intake and BMI (β = 0.05; CI: 0.03–0.06) in two smaller observational studies [3], while a larger cohort study of 3371 participants reported that those who consumed ArtSw daily showed a mean 0.77 kg/m2 greater BMI compared with non-consumers over an 8-year follow-up [22].

Our findings that greater ArtSw intakes were related to the development of obesity are consistent with previous studies.

If the CFL wants to make a rule change how about end the game when there's zero seconds left on the clock. I watch it all the time and I'm still confused at the end of the game why plays happen with no time left. My wife asked me why the game was still going on and I couldn't answer her.

If they can do it in football, they can do it in Canadian football. "Extra time, of, oh, I dunno, start playing and I'll blow the whistle when I feel like that's enough, and then the game will be over."

Does anyone know why emergency vehicles use their siren noise in the middle of the night? I often wonder that if I'm awake at night and I hear emergency vehicles being dispatched with their sirens blaring - like at 3 or 4am. I thought it was to prepare traffic to get out of the way, but why use it when there's no traffic and no vehicles on the road? Is it so the people experiencing the emergency know that help is on the way?

Someone says they enjoy a diet drink and you get a bunch of posts linking studies about how bad diet drinks are for you. That's the internet though. Moderation is king and I won't feel bad about having a couple artificially sweetened drinks a month and no one else should feel bad about having a fast food burger every once in a while.

If I'm only having a couple sodas a month(which is about what I do), they are going to have real sugar, because why half-ass a treat? It's the justification of drinking one or more diet sodas a day where it becomes an issue, because people think because they are zero calorie, they are harmless. The science shows that not to be true. People can do whatever they want, but they should at least be informed.

My go to calorie free sweetener is Monk Fruit. Some people don't like it but I actually prefer it to table sugar. I use it to sweeten stuff for my Ninja Creami and haven't found anything that links it to negative health outcomes but it hasn't been studied too much.

Sounds like the biggest risk might just be what they might add to it:
Quote:
Certain ingredients in monk fruit products may carry some risks. Erythritol, a sugar alcohol commonly added to granulated and powdered monk fruit, may increase the risk of blood clotting, stroke, heart attack, and death in people with a high risk for heart disease.11
You may want to avoid items that include erythritol. Check the ingredient list so you are aware of any additives.

Is it easy to find in it's fruit form? Or is it usually processed? Buying a bunch and freezing it to add to smoothies might be good, though I don't think I've ever tasted it.
I'm not much of a sweets guy anyway. If I do add sugar to my coffee it's, like, 30 grains.

Watch out for this stuff if you have dogs
Xylitol (sometimes called wood sugar or birch sugar) is#a common sugar substitute that can be toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can be fatal. It's regularly found in sugar-free chewing gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, vitamin supplements, a small handful of peanut butter brands and other 'low sugar' or sugar-free products.

I think that's mostly because it can be made from many sources, not just corn. Int he US it's almost always made form corn because of Big Corn down there. I think here they may use other grains depending on cost.
But when I do have pop I tend to go for the more niche stuff, which often does have real sugar.
