Default Internet Suggestions

Outside of Telus and Rogers together with Shaw, what are the best internet providers we have in Calgary for a good price.

Preferably 500MBPS or higher.

Thanks

I'm using Oxio, and it's worked great, but I've heard of better deals out there recently. If it turns out to be a good deal, whoever used my referral code should chime into this thread and post theirs so you can use it and you both get a free month. Or if they don't, you can use mine as a backup.

Isn't Oxio just a reseller running on Shawgers?

What I try to say is that there is no escape in Alberta, it is either Telus or Shaw/Rogers, unless you go satellite.

I think you might be referring to me - anyone else is welcome to use my code.

Been happy with all things involved in flipping over, as I was already with Shaw there was essentially no downtime, just plug in the new device and go.

I'm looking at finally changing our Internet provider. I'm currently with Shaw/Rogers. It's been really flakey lately and I pay too much. It looks like Oxio is the best option for my home and the cheapest. Teksavvy's prices are similar but go up in 12 months. They do say they have fibre in my neighbourhood when Telus doesn't. Is having fibre worth it? We don't livestream or anything. Just gaming and streaming tv and music.

I had really bad luck with Shaw and Shaw resellers at my current house and last one as well. Can-com's service was great, but they couldn't do anything about the terrible cable infrastructure so my internet service was really flaky.

Made the switch to Telus fibre a few months ago and it was a significant improvement. Also got a decent deal by reaching out to one of the reps on redflagdeals for better pricing than I could get ordering through the Telus website.

I loved Teksavvy themselves, but the shaw infrastructure was brutal and id lose internet for half an hour or so every single day it seemed.

Back to Telus I went. Hate the company, love the fibre

I'd say for most, no.

Those Oxio plans look decent but they seem to only have 50 Mbps upload for all but their top tier plan.

I'm tied to cable where I live in Elbow Valley. Telus doesn't offer fibre out here. The highest speed I can get from Telus is 100 Mbps for $75/mth. I don't know how Teksavvy can get fibre out here since there isn't any that I know of. I have just heard about lightspeed and it looks like they have pretty good prices too.

I use lightspeed. I use my own modem and router so I only pay the monthly service fee, no equipment rental fees. Prices are as good as I could have asked for on the market. I had read when signing up that the modem you use could affect the quality of your service, so I made sure to get a modem that was known for fewest dropouts and I've been mostly happy. If I've had a dropout, I think it was when all of the Rogers network was down (Lightspeed, like most ISPs, uses Rogers / Telus infrastructure)

If you want a referral code pm me, I'll look mine up.

Don't waste energy on fibre. Just get the plan that fits your needs. For my streaming/gaming/conference call needs the $40 cable "permanent flash sale" plan (75MBPS down, 7.5 MBPS up?) was perfect. I think they changed the structure a little bit to where it's 50 down / 50 up right now but that's still more than enough if you ask me, and the better up speed is probably better for work from home situations where you're screensharing or on camera.

The thing I like about going this route is that I have total control over the home network equipment (ethernet, wifi, MoCa). No depending on a big provider to send a person down to setup some trash wifi router with spotty coverage that doesn't work with the outdated extender they sent last time.

Hmm, they have decent options. Anyone using them that can comment on experience with them?

My Shawgers guarantee (whatever that's worth) is up in less than a year and am expecting an enormous jump.

Been slowly getting off of ISP provided email addresses in anticipation of a move.

**edit**
Wow, just looked at Moby plans. Symmetrical speeds. That's worth a look too.

Really? I'm with Shawgers on their 1 GB plan for $68/mo. It's not the advertised price, but it's not that hard to haggle with them to give you a discounted contract (especially if you have an offer from Telus to wave in their face)

Pretty much everyone is either a Shawgers or Telus reseller to some extent. But that doesn't mean the prices are.

I'm with TekSavvy right now, and apparently Spot Power has gotten into the internet reseller game now offering both cable and DSL through QWave. They're already quite a bit cheaper for electricity than Enmax, and look to be quite competitive with the Shawgers and Telus resellers.
