Ward 8 is going to be wide open - Nate Schmidt looks like a reasonable candidate with sensible positions. For Mayor it looks like it's going to be Farkas or Gondek. I'll be watching the debate on the 8th closely to see what Farkas is saying. If I get the feeling he is disingenuous I'll probably vote for Gondek.

I expect one or two of Thiessen, Sharp, or Davison will drop out before the 20th and throw their support behind someone else.

It's funny because he's a UCP party official.

He's one of these "run government like a business" types. And talks about needing people who have "signed the front of cheques and not the back". Except nothing in his job experience suggests he actually ran a business:

Keener Hachey has a wide array of professional experiences from being a Group Leader, a Senior Systems Analyst, a Programmer Analyst, and a Software Developer with a number of local distinguished Calgary companies

Sounds like his business experience is "mid level IT employee with companies he doesn't care to mention"

There seems to be a push to get Davison more support by people whose politics I don’t agree with. They’re probably thinking if the vote split happens between Gondek and Farkas, Davison can squeak up the middle.

Davison is sharing space with Sharp. The question really becomes, as a conservative voter do you want Davison and his corporate overlords or Sharp and her UCP overlords?

Also, a lot of the conservatives that voted for Farkas last election might not realize that he has changed at all. So Farkas could still be pulling those voters from Davison/Sharp.

Gondek will also be splitting votes with Thiessen... but Thiessen being in a party gives Gondek an advantage.

Voting for Gondek feels good for me as it really would represent sticking it to the UCP.

The Calgary Party will not be running a candidate in Ward 8 after announcing the departure of their candidate there due to medical reasons.

Today is the closing date for nominations, so we'll get the final candidate lists soon and the campaign can really begin (although, that hasn't stopped anyone up till now).

I have seen him multiple times this summer out in the NW biking. I am always shocked to see him on a bike, I forget to yell expletives.

Someone from DJ Kelly's campaign needs to re-evaluate the strategy of dropping off pamphlets in ward 1.

I don't live in Ward 6 but I do get targeted Facebook ads for Ward 6 candidates.

I went to law school with him, a year or so ahead of him, though so I don't know him well. Nice guy, says a bunch of good things. I thought he'd get more traction running up the middle than it seems he has.

Well he's big mad that the Canada Post union won't make an exception to deliver his flyers while they're currently not delivering flyers due to job action.

His party candidates aren't focused on their wards with their campaign materials. I mentioned that I received a pamphlet for DJ Kelly in Ward 1 and also Heather Mcrae (ward 7) has signs up in Ward 1 although the signs are promoting both McRae and Thiessen so I don't know which of those two put up the signs.

There's a truck with electronic billboards that drives around my neighbourhood with ads for the Ward 5 councillor candidate in my neighbourhood (which is a part of Ward 5). It's annoying because the background is bright pink and it flashes on and off, which always makes me think there's emergency vehicles outside (my house overlooks a main road).

I looked at the final list of candidates this evening and was surprised to see a friend of mine from elementary school running in Ward 1. I haven't seen the guy in about 30 years but we were good buds growing up. I might have to vote for him.

Just a feeling on my part, but whenever someone fairly unknown tries to "run it up the middle" or be a centrist or play both sides.... they often give off a feeling like they are not on a side.

If he is a progressive, then what makes him a better progressive than Gondek?
If he is a conservative, then what makes him a better conservative than Sharp?

Trying to land himself in between those two options while also differentiating himself from Farkas and Davison is a tall order as those are all known names from last election. Then throw on top of that the fact that he is in a party (and a lot of voters are anti-party) and it makes it even more of an uphill battle for Thiessen.

IMO, he would probably be doing better if he came in as a more serious progressive populist as he would then have his own lane to stand out and get votes.
