If you're right it's going to take a whole lot of Treliving wizardry to fit a new McDavid salary under the cap and fill a roster, the whole team is full of NM/NT clauses.

With their contracts that are expiring and if they move Domi they should be close. When a player like McDavid becomes available you find a way.

Low on current and future but starting to move in the right direction
I don’t quite know how to explain it as it’s a 2x2 chart with each team plotted
Calgary is in a clump with the islanders and flyers

It's a terrible model. Ranked 1-10 for Present Rating and Future Rating slaps them onto the chart.
The Flames are 2 Present and 3 Future. The Oilers are 9.5 Present and 7.5 Future. The model sucks.

Isn't the cap expected to jump roughly 9 million as well? If that's the case Toronto can make that work fairly easy.

They have $24.85M in cap.space next year with 16/23 active roster spots filled. McDavid could take $17M per year and would leave over $7M and the need to fill 6 roster spots.
The lowest cap space a team has right now for next season is Carolina with $16.13M. Next is Boston with $19.93M. Every other team has over $20M in cap space, with 24 teams having over $26M in cap space.
Nearly any team can fit in McDavid without any wizardry.

Not to mention you can probably pencil in Cowan on an ELC as one of those spots come 2026-2027

Yep, just checked Capwages and they have the Leafs with almost $25 million in space next year with 5F, 1D, and a backup to sign.
So they can easily sign McDavid July 1st to a max deal, they’d just then have to offload some salary elsewhere to give them room to fill the rest of the open roster spots.

In that case I hope dissentowner is right, If McDavid walks as a UFA it would be an epic meltdown in sweat pant land and Flames fans will have perpetual boners and grins.

Anywhere east is good, Flames can bet him in a cup final to put a nice bow on his legacy.

Can’t wait for all the media sharing pics of him in his Leafs jammies as a kid.
If he does end up going to Toronto, it will be almost as insufferable as him being in Edmonton with their fanbase and how much the national media is going to fawn over him. But the keyword there is ‘almost’ and it’s still worth it for him to go there and see all the Oiler fan tears than him stay in Edmonton.

Imagine Rogers Place on the night that McDavid first returns in a Toronto jersey after having walked away for nothing.
Now that would be glorious!
Would he even be able to play?

Half the building will contain Leaf fans anyways.

Edmonton is no good and everyone knows it. Even Jack Roslovic knows it. He dodged a bullet and can't let his agent be an idiot and let it come that close again.

So this happened last week. I thought long and hard about what to say/ask...to be respectful, yet have a subtle jab. There were about 100 ppl in attendance, and when he polled the room, I'd say it was about 70% Oilers fans.
I started off by saying it has been a long 10 years as a Flames fan, white knuckling it since McDavid was drafted by the Oilers. I followed that up by saying "Is it weird knowing that this will be the last season McDavid is in an Oilers jersey".
Second thing I said..."Enough about the Oilers, especially after the last two years. 2004...I have my opinion, but I want to know what those within 'the hockey world' think. Was it in?"
Kevin - Talks about angles of camera and how it wasn't ideal etc., but then stated "yes, I believe it was in, as do most within the hockey world."
Me - "So what you're saying is that the Flames have won the cup more recently than the Oilers have?" (I then quickly proceeded to hand the mic over to someone else and sat down with a "my job here is done" attitude.)
He had a good laugh, as did the room. It was respectful banter, but I felt accomplished hahaha.
