YES! This is the only way to deal with parts places.
"Hey...do you have Brake Rotors for an F-150?"
The system says I have 12 so I might have 1, maybe 2. How many do you need?
And then yes. You get put on hold while I see what is actually there and personally and physically lay eyes and hands upon them.
Because the last thing I want is for a customer to show up to my counter and there are no Brake Rotors and then what? I'm all shoulders...what can I do?
And now I've got someone who has made the trip to the store, no parts, their vehicle is broken and I've now got to be face to face with someone who is "Stage 10 pissed."
No. I'd rather be sure they really exist first before the customer makes the trip.
Yeah, I'll throw your name on them if they're here. I'll even hide them so they're not sold before you get there
I hated that about Parts. The inventory system was atrociously flawed.
But I'm not in charge of inventory or ordering, theres nothing I can do about it other than, in my opinion, be honest. I'm not going to tell you to come and get it unless I KNOW its there. For sure.
Because nobody likes buying car parts. They're doing it because their car is broken, so they're going to be out money, they're going to be replacing these on their own time, they are inconvenienced because their car is broken, maybe they've had to bum rides or whatever and then over the phone they're told we've got lots when we have none and now I've got a seriously pissed off person in my face and all I can do is weather the maelstrom of (fairly deserved) bitching and screaming.
Any qualified Parts guy shouldnt have to learn this lesson more than once. Never trust 'The System' put your hands on the part before claiming you have it.
Dont even get me started on: "Uh..these rotors are old and used" because some clownshoes idiot in Customer Service returns took some old ones back but booked them into new inventory.
Damn that was a terrible job.
