If a defenseman is not good in his own end but his forward group scores most often when he is on the ice I can use analytics to suggest that D man is a stud defensively. The eye test doesn't mislead with numbers and it doesn't lie, that's why we watch the games.

I have eyes too believe it or not.
And opinions of my own that aren't analytics.
But if I have an axe to grind on a player and I notice his analytics don't line up with my axe I tend to ask myself am I wrong? What's his role? Is he meeting the expectations of his role?
I'm thankful there are analytics though because too often players that do all the little things right are completely over looked by those that focus on either offence only or superficial counting stats.
Think about the bolded. So a player goes an entire season with less bad stuff happening defensively but gets no credit because he's bald ass lucky enough to have forwards carry him every time he's on the ice.
Seriously?
And if you don't think an eye test misleads let me introduce you to the term confirmation bias.
