Has there ever been a formal announcement from any player, prior to retirement? I'm not saying he's a bad player, but better players haven't done formal announcements. Seems odd to have a press conference to announce such a thing.

Kopitar has been my favourite non-Flame player for a long, long time. I had some work pals from Slovenia back when he was just breaking into the league and they were so excited to have this kid who wasn't just an NHLer but looked to be a star, so I always paid attention to him. Sad that he'll be gone but holy cow, what a career. 2 cups, 2 Selkes, 3 Lady Byngs. 40th all time in points with 1278. All time leader for the Kings in games played and assists and just 30 away from Dionne for the all time franchise points leader, so pretty safe bet he'll finish with that one. That's a slam dunk first-ballot hall of fame resume. I loved watching him drag that thrown-together Team Europe all the way to the 2016 World Cup Final.
