Both my kids have iPads and iPhones and I can successfully monitor and control every aspect. Including the wonderful notification if adult content is blocked (for example an ad or picture in a web search). Using the time feature everything goes dark except being able to call me or their mom l, no other apps work or any other contacts (911 still does obviously) and location based allows me to lock out games when they leave the house so they don’t play at school.

Yeah, we were an Android family for years, but when my oldest was around 14 or 15 my wife switched to iPhone and we got the kids iPhones for the parental controls. Crappy sacrifice for my wife as she prefers the hardware options with Android (jealous of my Flip), but the ease with which we were able to manage our kids' phones was worth the trade off.
Today still she uses the find my iPhone or whatever that thing is that allows you to spy on the location of your family (with the kids' permission...I don't get it, but they like us knowing where they are). They spy on her location, too. I'm the only one footloose and fancy free with no tracking of me.
Anyway, in our experience iPhones are way better than Androids for parents.
