I've also believe one of the Flames ideas they're revisiting for drafting is to occasionally draft later round guys with a friend in our prospect pool. I assume for later round guys, it's an attempt to increase the odds they succeed.
I think the first pair I starting being aware of was Andersson/Mangiapane and that was a success, but also almost seems like it was purely by accident. They just ended up being really good at a lot of the media together as prospects which helped to highlight and give insight into whether having a buddy helps in the development field. Lots of the initial work is kinda off ice and away from the eyes of the development team. Having someone you kinda knew before the draft to compare notes to, keep accountable, go through similar changes as they work towards reaching the AHL together probably helps a lot.
Prior to 2015, I didn't ever think about whether prospects that played on the same team meant anything. I think I started paying attention a little more starting from the 2023 draft.
It seems that in 2016 Tkachuk and Parsons were apparently on the same team together. However, I don't recall ever hearing mentions of them being teammates before I looked it up. The next time teammates were drafted that I am aware of was in 2023 for Honzek/Lipinski.
Mews/Beck played a season together on the 67s.
Suniev/Littler and Morin/Pelletier I think I saw something where it was mentioned they kinda knew of each other (or had mutual friends or something) even though they didn't play on the same team.
Potter/Phillips played on the national team together and IIRC, there's random videos of them playing ping pong or something together?
