Yeah and nobody told Murphy either. There were some quotes from him about being excited for a fresh start. Then next day on unconditional waivers for buyout.

And he went straight to the KHL.

Looked into that trade a bit. Kanzig ended his career (2022) with Slazberg EC in the Austria League and won a championship. The next year Ryan Murphy showed up (2023) and played for the same team for two years and won both years. Small world.

Also, Salzberg EC has won the Championship four years in a row which is cool.

Scouting teams plan for the entire draft based on what they prioritize, the various types of players in a draft and where players they like are likely to go and where they'll probably need to take them even if they may not be BPA. Most fans/draft pundits think less wholistically and criticize each pick if we think or hear there might have been a better player available at the time (Cameron Schmidt) or if we don't like a perceived skillset that a player brings for where they're drafted.

They took Phillips in the third because they saw there were a number of big defenders in this draft, and they wanted one of them as part of their draft plan. They probably would have preferred to take Phillips later, and maybe a guy like Wyttenbach earlier, but as Button said after the draft, goalies and big bodied-defenders tend to go in groups, so if they were going to get one of them, they felt they needed to draft him in the third as a number of others had already been taken (7 in the first and 5 more before Calgary picked in the 2nd).

Even draft darling Carolina passed on Cameron Schmidt and took two big-bodied defenders in the third round instead, as this draft clearly prioritized big defenders.

I've become less concerned over the last few years about individual strategic picks like Phillips because the scouting team has shown that they can find value throughout the draft, and if a guy like Phillips turns out, look out, as he'll be a big part of the team.

Flames have also done a bit of "What don't we have?" drafting in some years when looking for complimentarities to their prospect base. Got a bunch of smaller puck-moving defenders? Kinda makes sense to go for more physical defensive-minded guys to play with them.

I've also believe one of the Flames ideas they're revisiting for drafting is to occasionally draft later round guys with a friend in our prospect pool. I assume for later round guys, it's an attempt to increase the odds they succeed.

I think the first pair I starting being aware of was Andersson/Mangiapane and that was a success, but also almost seems like it was purely by accident. They just ended up being really good at a lot of the media together as prospects which helped to highlight and give insight into whether having a buddy helps in the development field. Lots of the initial work is kinda off ice and away from the eyes of the development team. Having someone you kinda knew before the draft to compare notes to, keep accountable, go through similar changes as they work towards reaching the AHL together probably helps a lot.

Prior to 2015, I didn't ever think about whether prospects that played on the same team meant anything. I think I started paying attention a little more starting from the 2023 draft.

It seems that in 2016 Tkachuk and Parsons were apparently on the same team together. However, I don't recall ever hearing mentions of them being teammates before I looked it up. The next time teammates were drafted that I am aware of was in 2023 for Honzek/Lipinski.

Mews/Beck played a season together on the 67s.

Suniev/Littler and Morin/Pelletier I think I saw something where it was mentioned they kinda knew of each other (or had mutual friends or something) even though they didn't play on the same team.

Potter/Phillips played on the national team together and IIRC, there's random videos of them playing ping pong or something together?
