I'm sure he knows now that other teams can and would offer.

Okay, it might not be new, but how was what he said not concerning?

Its all about the McLegacy at this point, the only way he resigns in Edmonton is if they win the cup this year.

He sees that most other generational guys (sans ovie) have already won by this point in their career, and doesn't want to be the guy that goes down in history that hasn't.

It’s concerning, but it’s no different then what he said weeks ago so it’s not more concerning.

If anything after the podcast I am less concerned. As I noted above.

I'm not thinking money. I don't believe dollar value is a hurdle of any kind on his next contract. He's going to get paid. I'm leaning pretty heavily towards dissentowner's information being accurate and he does indeed want to head to Toronto. But, if he's shopping himself, I'm sure he'll ask his courters some specific questions which are important to him. If he's truthful on that front, that would be around what the team will do to keep themselves competetive during his time there. Or, it could be a million other things he wants. I have no idea what's important to him.

Actually the only way he might debate staying an extra year or two is if they came close again imo. If they win the Cup that just makes it easier for him to leave. The only thing remotely holding him there is winning a Cup with Draisaitl.

However, if he wins the cup, his job is done in Edmonton and it is time to move on.

If he wants a legacy, he should go and bring a cup to Toronto. After 57 years, if he could solve that, he would be the absolute saviour for the biggest hockey market in the world. There is nothing he could do in Edmonton that would bring him a legacy like that.

From Chris Johnston's article yesterday:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/663...amp-extension/

His biggest point of reticence, per league sources, remains an aging roster, which he believes can contend again in 2025-26 but which doesn’t look to be constructed to sustain a championship level over the long term. And he more or less said as much publicly in June, telling reporters, “If I feel that there’s a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem.”

Staples latest in the Journal.

“ 4. I’m good if he stays or goes. How about you?

As I see it it’s his life, his future, his call.

He’s been a great player for the Oilers. He’s given his all to the team for a decade and will do so this year. He’s got every right to pick and choose where he wants to play after that. He should fully explore all options. He would be irresponsible to fail to do so.”

Turn out the lights, the party’s ovah…..

Is anyone else a little torn on whether they want McDavid to sign a long-term deal or to leave? On one hand, it's hilarious if he leaves, because they obviously squandered this once-in-a-generation player and have nothing to show for it. On the other hand, signing him to a massive deal for 8 years would be glorious because it ties up a ton of money, and their window is either closing or already gone.

If that’s what Staples is saying, then it looks like McDavid’s gone at the end of the season. Staples has moved beyond denial to acceptance.

How many times has a high profile player gone into a season without an extension and re-signs before becoming a free agent?

Such a bizarre setup for that interview. Gives me Basic Instinct vibes but with soft lighting.

I don't know how that interview wouldn't be concerning for Oilers fans. Seems fairly obviously they are going to have to convince him they will have a competitive team after 25-26 and beyond. I don't know that they can.

Especially if he goes after the season ends and the Oilers get nothing or very little for him.

Lots of times. But this is McDavid, a generational player. He can ask for a max $$ contract wherever he signs. So all that matters is whether he has somewhere that he really wants to play (?Toronto), or which team he thinks has the best chance at multiple Stanley Cup wins if he signs with them as a UFA.

What was 32T expecting to get out of that interview? McDavid is going to and always keep his cards close.
