Default Telus accuses Rogers of interfering with sponsorship of Calgary Flames

Telus has filed a complaint with the CRTC against Rogers. Read the article for the more general claims. The quote is just what they are claiming Rogers is doing with the NHL.

https://calgarysun.com/news/local-ne...source=twitter

Quote:
Meanwhile, Telus said it was also hit with an unexpected cancellation of an ad campaign last November by Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corp., which owns the Calgary Flames. That came after Telus had begun displaying digital board ads for its PureFibre internet service — encouraging customers to “ditch old cable” — at the Scotiabank Saddledome, where the Flames play home games.

Telus said the ads were placed as part of its nearly two-decade sponsorship of the Flames, through which it has advertising rights on some CSEC properties.

But around one month into the campaign, Telus said CSEC informed it that the NHL rejected the ad.

“It is clear that Rogers was behind the NHL’s actions,” said Telus’ filing, pointing to Rogers’ $11-billion agreement with the NHL, starting in the 2026-27 season, that keeps it the national TV rightsholder in Canada for 12 years.

“Rogers and the NHL have a long-standing relationship … through which Rogers can exert influence.”

Telus said the NHL cited concerns about “ambush marketing” — when a brand capitalizes on an event by creating an association without being an official sponsor.

It said that shortly after the NHL blocked the PureFibre ads, Rogers also pulled a Telus commercial for PureFibre from its Calgary Flames broadcasts “on the grounds that it had the authority to remove content deemed damaging to its company.”

The Flames declined to comment.

A pox on both their houses – but Telus is in the right on this one.

Maybe whichever one of these companies can bring Canada, a supposedly first world country, into the 21st century by providing uninterrupted cell coverage along the Trans Canada Highway, should prevail.

The NHL will never do that. Nobody else on earth is stupid enough to pay that much money for the rights – especially since there is only one other possible bidder.

I don't have experience with Rogers for over 15 years but I am confident it won't be Telus.

I'm reminded of Alien v. Predator. Whoever wins, we lose.

Hmm that Telus ad does seem a little spicy, since it is clearly anti-Rogers. I'm sure Telus just ran a different ad and this didn't affect either business at all

Nah. We want Rogers to lose. Telus isn't responsible for substandard NHL broadcasts.

In the 21st century, mountains amplify cellular and wireless signals

Telus isn't running ads with crap 80's nostalgia music and the Oilers winning Stanley Cups. Not hard to see who the less bad guy is in this fight. Who knows how much those jerks spent on their thanks for bringing the cup back to Canada ads featuring the Oilers that are sitting in a vault to never be used.

Telus is not better for cell coverage either.

Probably cause they all rent space on the same towers.

More like the Canucks vs the Oilers.

Won't much matter either way for cell coverage as Starlink coverage will make cell towers obsolete. Starlink is in beta testing and Rogers has signed up with Starlink for Canadian cell coverage. You will be able to use cells everywhere.
