Icon48 Formenton, Dube, Hart, Mcleod, Foote suspended until Dec 1.

Free to sign with NHL teams on Oct 15

Quote:
The NHL and NHLPA have agreed that the five players acquitted in the 2018 London sexual assault trial will be suspended until Dec. 1, although they will have the opportunity to sign with NHL teams as soon as Oct. 15, Sportsnet has learned.

According to multiple sources, the players will not appeal the decision.

There is precedent for this. Without an agreement, commissioner Gary Bettman would need to hold a hearing and make a ruling. If the union or players disagreed, everyone risked the possibility of an uncertain and/or lengthy arbitration grievance process. Shane Pinto’s 41-game suspension in 2023 for violating the league's sports wagering policy went through a similar negotiation.

Michael McLeod had been charged with one count of sexual assault, plus one count of being a party to the offences. Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton and Carter Hart were each charged with one count of sexual assault. All pleaded not guilty to their charges when the trial opened in April.

The five players were acquitted of all charges on July 24 by Justice Maria Carroccia after a two-month trial in London, Ont.

After the verdict, the league stated the players — none of whom have contracts with NHL teams — weren’t eligible to play while it reviewed the judge's findings. Previously, the NHL had said it would let the charges go through the legal system before deciding about the players’ eligibility.

Curious as to whether any team sign them...or is there an unspoken understanding in place among the league and GMs that these guys won't ever play in the league again?

Even giving one of them a tryout seems questionable - although it might reduce the risk of a collusion charge.

All signs point to Hart going to Edmonton IMO, and I'm not even saying that jokingly. I think their play is gonna be Skinner / Hart tandem to show McDavid how they've "improved" their goaltending.

I doubt any of them get an offer. Odd that it's as of October 15th. I could've seen a team or two offering a training camp offer but given it's late, I just can't see a team taking a chance on any of them. It was probably purposely done to have that date.

Could they do a tryout, sign October 15 and play December 1? Seems like a huge reputational risk to sign a mediocre player with this much baggage, especially given the high likelihood they end up in the AHL.

Dube is probably the one most likely to be NHL ready given that he played in the NHL while suspended.

Unless no one else makes an offer, I would assume any Canadian team would be the bottom of their lists. It would be a constant talking point here whereas you could probably go play in Carolina or California and bask in the anonymity.

I'm still not sure anyone signs any of them.

Hart will get offers. The rest, highly doubt it. Not that I'd want any of them on my team but I especially wouldn't have any interest in a player like Dube with or without this oversized black mark on his CV.

Oilers fans are absolutely chomping at the bit to sign hart, im inclined to believe its more likely to happen than not. I dont know if any of the other guys get offers though, just not enough benefit for the side show it will cause.

I bet McDavid would be consulted prior to the signing of any of these players. They aren't going to sign someone and risk pushing him away, imo.

Hart will definitely be signed. The rest? No clue. It's not like any of them lit the world on fire with their play prior.

Well that's old news. He's essentially McGM up there.

He can veto the coach too.

IMO that makes it less likely to actually happen. If Hart signs there, its because McDavid gave it his tacit support. Why would McDavid do that - it's not worth his reputational risk either.

Seems like the most realistic avenue back is to go play in Europe, show that you are capable of playing, then hope to secure a shot on a min deal somewhere you can fly under the radar like NSH or CAR or STL.

Is he even a upgrade? He was pretty bad his last 2-3 years and hasn't played at a significant level in ~2 years. Go for it if you want Oilers but he ain't worth the PR nightmare to follow.

The PR nightmare is also why he wont go there
He will want to go to a quiet market
Wasn’t there speculation about Carolina?

I keep saying this. His numbers are no better than Skinner's. Frankly, I don't think Skinner is great but he's also not quite as bad as they think. His team doesn't care about him at all.
