Then at the bottom it's the teams that beat the Oilers in the final.

At this point, for me: Boston, Carolina, and the Islanders get the "beat the Canucks and/or Oilers in the Final" exemption; Columbus gets the Johnny exemption; and the Flyers are our kindred spirits in the East.
That leaves Buffalo and Washington. The Sabres get my vote for their ongoing ineptitude.

how did Florida not end up as everyone's least-hated opposition? After everything they've done the last two years, how they can be anything other than everyone's next favorite team is beyond me (ownership issues aside)

Kindred spirits? Maybe their present makeup is similar, but Calgary never had an ahole to the extent of Clarke. And their fans are terrible. They are always in top ten lists for worst fans, often number one (the Leafs are often number one also).
