I think it's always been accepted as somewhat obvious, and part of any business, to most sensible observers.

The 'rankle' comes when some posit that ownership approval is the exclusive domain of the Flames and that Flames' ownership is some evil, meddling buffoonery, that only wants to finish 8th every year.

When people go overboard, there is going to be pushback.

From my perspective, athlete or not, it's not immature (I think that's what you're suggesting?) or stupid for someone to feel down after discovering how poorly others think of their performance. Just a normal reaction and human nature and it probably hits especially hard for a guy who arrived in Calgary at 18 and really does see the city as his home and the community as his pack. I get that pros are better served not reading social media and CP if they're a Calgary Flame, but in today's age, it's something I feel never happens even if athletes tell us they don't read social media.

He's a professional athlete under a spotlight that had an awful year.

Yeah, he's going to read how much he sucked if he goes looking for it.

Athletes would also have to basically avoid going on any social media platform to avoid seeing comments about their play. People were sending death threats to athletes because they lost bets.

Rasmus needs to stop reading his own headlines. Sounds like he's being a bit of whiner.

I don't think he's whining at all - he's right.

The Flames aren't offering him a big contract - which is likely based a bit on his play the last 18 months.

If he believes he's better than he's shown over the last year then why would he take less money now, in a city he's never played in before, just to help the Flames get a better return in a trade.

Sounds more like he's betting on himself to have a better season to then be able to cash in bigger in free agency.

That's 100% his own right and not him being a whiner.

I think posters on this board feel he is whining more about fans reaction to his play than his approach to free agency. 100% agree, he has earned the right to test the market and do what he needs to do to maximize his next contract.

We all want honesty and actual answers from players ... until we get it ... then they need to grow up and not be such a whiner.

I'd be chaffed too if I was being run out of town by x% of the fan base after being a heart and soul home grown player that loves the team and the city.

I don’t get it when athletes/celebs act all hurt for being criticized. You make money being a public figure

All athletes handle criticism well from their coaches and peers. What bothers them is criticism from people who know less than them.

Sure, but that's 5abi's point. Being criticized by people who know less than him is partly why a guy like Andersson makes millions to play a game.

Your previous post is kind of funny too... A big part of Andersson's game is **** talking on the ice. He's now getting "butt hurt" because people are **** talking him.

I don’t even think he’s upset. I’ve listened to plenty of Ras interviews and he’s just blunt and honest and never seems to shy away from calling it like it is.

People on here and some media types have repeatedly dragged him. I don’t see anything weird about him acknowledging it, and the idea that people should just be able to say whatever they want without players ever acknowledging, lest they be “whiners,” it is kind of silly

I read it as him throwing those comments back at those people. If he sucks so much, why would he sign now? He’s right.

Is he actually being run out of town though? I always thought the discussion was whether Andersson is a $7M defenseman, or a $9M defenseman like his ask suggests. I mean everyone was praising his hot start last year, some were even calling him a star. Then he started chewing on minuses every night, which lead people to question if he can carry a pairing against top opposition.

I thought most of the backlash from the fanbase on x was after Dregger mentioned Andersson prevented a whopper of a deal by not wanting to extend with the acquiring team. I can see why fans wouldn't want to the Andersson situation to end in a bad trade like it happened with Hanifin.

Look at some of the comments in this very thread and others about him.
It's a small and ####ty part of the fan base.

I wonder where he reads that "he sucks". That kind of stuff doesn't appear in mainstream media so I assume he looks at places like CP and reddit. I'm not judging him but that also seems easy enough to avoid unless it is something players routinely talk about. Maybe he seeks it out as fuel, who knows.

I've often wondered about college instructors who get paid a fraction of these guys but get savaged mercilessly on those rate my prof websites. You need skin thicker than most to seek that information out and then not let it affect you.

Is Andersson being run out of town? He’s a prominent player on the last year of contract. Of course there will be all kinds of speculation about his future and people calling to trade him.

There’s no city in any major pro sports league where he wouldn’t be subject to that kind of speculation and commentary. Well, maybe a pro hockey team in Germany or somewhere else nobody cares - and where the players get paid $90k a year because no one cares.

Unless I’m missing something, Andersson hasn’t been subject of death threats or people dumping garbage on his lawn. Just the standard scrutiny and criticism that goes with the job for all high-profile athletes.

I remember a pretty strong contingent on this site that saw dark red every time someone mentioned even negotiating with the guy.

Social media can be worse.
