If he's not signed by Oct 8th puck drop, then I'm officially on the dissentowner train.

I would be surprised if Bowman would be the one negotiation with McDavid. I would assume this one is handled either by Lowe, or directly by Katz, so the report of there being 'no contact' between Bowman and McDavid's camp rings a little hollow for me, to be honest.
However, this is going to get better and better to follow the longer it drags out. Please let it drag right past the deadline!

I think it is going to be really interesting to watch McDavid's play in the first half of the season. For the last couple years, he has coasted for the first 20 or 30, saving himself for the playoffs. But this is a contract year - does he go all out from day 1, or does he continue the 'it's all about the playoffs' strategy? Keep in mind they have gone to the cup finals 2 years in a row, so starting the season at top gear seems very unlikely.
If he and especially the Oilers get off to a slow start, the media will turn this into a circus extraordinaire! Which of course will exacerbate things 10-fold.
It has the makings of being absolutely glorious!

I think right now Mcdavid could ask for a number and the oilers would gladly comply. He isnt like others where its performance in a contract year will determine what the contract looks like. Its basically a blank cheque already signed, he just needs to cash it

The cheque will be there, regardless of his play. However, he is a human being, so the situation is going to have an impact on him. And all those in Oilerville.

HF Oilers is just too much fun to read. McDavid's contract has them stressed.

McDavid's team is just waiting to see if anything happens with the Kawhi Leonard news before making some "special requests" as part of the contract.

The Beaverton is getting in on the fun!
Visibly trembling Oilers fan insists he’s not worried about McDavid contract situation

“These things take time. I’m sure Connor is just trying to figure out how much of a discount to give to the team in order to help them win a Cup,” said Serrano, as the tea cup he was trying to pick up shook and rattled so violently that he spilled Earl Grey all over himself while taking a sip.
“There’s no way he would leave a team that’s been to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals and has his best friend on it,” he added as sweat began to pour from his brow.

He has a full NTC so he obviously controls his fate. Assume then that, if he’s going to be traded, he would only accept a trade to teams he considers legit contenders. That likely narrows the list down to maybe 5-6 teams. Of those teams, how many can fit him under the cap? Have to assume the oilers retain salary to maximize the number of teams they could trade him to. What does he bring back in trade? Has to be a haul even in those circumstances of limited options because the oilers would rather not trade him at all than trade him for a poor return - simply because of the optics of getting crushed on a trade for McDavid.
Example teams he might consider true contenders by the TDL (hard to guess though):
Florida
Vegas
Tampa
Colorado
Toronto
Carolina
Dallas
What would teams like that trade to acquire McDavid for a playoff run? Would they have enough?
|
To a contender, as a rental it would be largely futures. It would still be alot though. Likely that teams top prospect and 1st rounder, maybe a good roster player.

but that's the catch 22... if you were mcdavid and want to win a cup with a contender, why would you ok a trade to a team that basically needs to give up a ton of good assets to acquire you? he needs need those assets on the team for that team to still be a contender

Good point. So it probably has to be all futures. Multiple first round picks. Top prospect and a young NHL player that has a good chance to develop into a top 6 forward or a top 4 defenceman but is not that yet (eg. Zary equivalent).
