Depends on who has the delegation of authority to approve a $52.5MM expenditure. Dollar value that high probably does go to the board.

It actually seems like NJ has plenty of quality assets on D, so a potential trade wouldn't sting as much for VAN. If they get Nemec + Hamilton back, for example, that could be a pretty good deal for both sides.

This was, at one point, a major issue that was being discussed separating our ownership groups from others in the league.
The crux of the argument was that, within the acceptable salary range of the club, hockey operations and long term hockey decisions should largely rest with the GM/ president of hockey operations and not with ownership.
It was discussed as a major item for Treliving, it was discussed as the hold up on some of the johnny/tkachuk negotiations, and now its coming up again. Just noting that we are basically back to this point. I am not even saying it's wrong, just noting that we, collectively, have previously taken umbrage over similar procedures being in place in the organization.

I've always assumed every franchise operates under a model where above a certain contract dollar amount, it requires ownership approval. That dollar figure may differ from team to team, but I imagine it exists across every team to some degree.

In Carolina I think that dollar amount is $1

I think it's a logical view point, I guess I am just wondering why this rankled people so much before but now is just accepted.

I think the bigger issue was autonomy on trades versus contracts. The one that got trotted out a lot was the Bishop trade.

Some of it is anecdotal I think. There were a couple of examples, where reportedly, deals were on the table and they didn't happen because the owner couldn't be reached to approve. I might be wrong, but maybe one involving Frederik Andersen?
^Oh maybe it was Bishop.

The Colts owner was on the sidelines Sunday with a headset. Owners are going to do what they want with their investment.
Except when it comes time to pay for where they play. Then the team is part of the community.

Unless I'm mistaken, the LEAGUE has to approve deals. They need to review contract structure and terms and clauses to ensure they're compliant before they can be officially filed with Central Registry and announced.
Team brass (usually ownership or PoHO) has authority on most teams to approve moving forward with trades or deals, but it usually varies by team.

If I was an owner I would be completely over-involved and treat the team like my play-thing. Fans would hate me!

If I owned a team I would sure like to listen in on scouting meetings and trade calls, etc. Just because I’m a nerd and would love to be a fly on the wall.

Yeah I'd be full on Jerry Jones.
If I own the team it's because I want to be the guy involved in all those decisions.
Hell I'd probably still be posting on here and arguing with you guys about decisions.

If i was an owner CP might have enough street cred to have legit pull on deals i saw as possible.
Why not? One of our posters kids just made the team. And I'll say I'm pretty excited by it because that kid looks incredible.

That doesn’t make sense.
In each situation basically all teams can trade for him as rental.
When he would have signed long term with one team, that was one team that might pay more. And if not, each situation is identical.

I hate reading this from Raz, partly because I'm a big fan of his and I've been insisting that he in fact doesn't suck and he just had a bad year but moreso because I don't want the Flames fan base to get that reputation of running good players out of town, like Canucks or Leafs fans.

It’s stupid for an athlete to read and value the opinions of people that don’t know much about hockey. Maybe he hasn’t quite grown up in this city.

It may be stupid, but it's also human nature. They play for the fans. Surely the fans' opinions matter to them.
Besides, I wouldn't say the CP posters generally "don't know much about hockey" and there's plenty of posters who've said nasty things about him and other players.
