I crossed another movie off my "I can't believe I've never seen" list yesterday with my first watch of Master and Commander. Absolutely fantastic film, I just sat back and enjoyed the ride that Russell Crowe took me on with his capable hands. It recently got a new 4K transfer and looked fantastic, those navy battles were breathtaking.

I watched the 4K version yesterday as well. It's one of those "they don't make them like that any more" movies even though it's just over 20 years old.

Had fun with Toxic Avenger. Campy R rated junk food with an attitude.
It's a 2023 film that I guess had trouble finding a distributor because they weren't sure what kind of audience would go to see it. I guess I am in that demographic lol.
Elijah Wood loves these sort of roles since he stepped out of the spotlight. The last couple films of his I've seen have been #####ed, but I get the sense that he enjoys them.
The New York Times has compiled a list of the best 100 movies of the 21st Century. Unfortunately, they started with Jan 1st 2000, but I'll forgive them since it's not like they're a respected news organization.
I have no big beefs with the list because it's subjective, and there aren't any stinkers on it, although I'd maybe argue that Anchorman doesn't belong.
I've seen 83 of the films on the list, and I want to see 11 of those that remain.

They should have ejected hysterical Sandra Bullock into the Moon.
It was an absolutely fantastically shot, beautiful looking movie, but the story and the characters? No Bueno.
I loved gravity. Just like Top Gun Maverick, the visual spectacle overrode any schlock those movies put you through. Gravity is the best movie filmed about space. By that I mean the cinematography. Beats interstellar by a little bit.
Won't be the best for long as Tom Cruise is still green lit on that movie actually filmed in space.

####. I almost forgot about The Lives of Others. Chilling film. Absolutely worth a watch. City of God is in that same vein.
Also forgot about Adaptation. That movie is a trip. Her is also a fantastic film that feels rather prescient now with AI the way it is. Spike Jonze is a surprisingly good director.
I do like that they put in some high quality animation films in there like Spirited Away, Ratatouille, Up, and Wall-E. Those movies are incredible.
Thank them for including Oldboy. Still one of my top 5 movies of all time.
Even though I'm a huge PT Anderson fan, I take issue with Punch Drunk Love being on the list. I liked it, but didn't think it deserves to be in the conversation of films of this caliber.
Mulholland Dr. does not belong anywhere near the top of this list. Self-indulgent freakout fest. The movie makes no ####ing sense, and I've seen about a billion interpretations of it over the years, it still doesn't make sense. Weird for the sake of weird doesn't impress me.

I've seen 74. I thought I was a big movie buff, but apparently not. It's tough to watch the cool stuff once you have kids.

Movies like Anchorman were Millennials' Stripes. It's still one of the most quotable movies of the last 20 years.
I love Anchorman but it still feels out of place.

The Lives of Others or any of the films dealing with authoritarian regimes really hit hard these days.
Do see Let the Right One In when you can. It's a must watch.

I'm obligated to tell you to read the whole Aubrey-Maturin series if you enjoyed the movie. As great as the movie is (and I *LOVE* the movie) the books are even better!

Went to see Weapons cuz you guys said you loved it. Maybe I'm just old, maybe, but it failed to communicate with me. It was ok, I like the way they told the story, but overall it was just a 6/10.
Fair enough. It's a bit of a thinking man's movie.
